Patride: You know, there's an idea. Once in a very great while the feature comes in handy to not lock my keys in there. For the passenger, though, it's always just annoying. Maybe I could just disable the one side.
coffmantx: That's really a tough question. There are other threads, and they seem to be putting in deeper speakers than I measure will fit under the stock panels. I wa going to put in Kenwood KFC-1379ie's, but even their shallow depth (1 13/16") is more than the 1 9/16" or so you get stock clearance. It's hard to get *anything in there without shimming out and cutting the door panel and putting in new grilles. I eventually got Infinity Reference 6002si's. They'll require cutting metal, but I wasn't as concerned about that as I was about fitting everything behind the stock grills, and at 1 7/8" deep, they're very close to the other depth (and both are over stock depth), so I'll have to modify anyway.
The latter speaker is 6 1/2", the Kenwood was 5 1/4". Because of the way the interior metal is recessed in the speaker area, you can actually get an extra .5 inch if you use a bigger speaker (using the outer metal) or shim out the inner area. This then of course decreases the height you have to play with. Stock clearance height is difficult to measure, as you'd have to get in there with the panes on and everything, but I can say that the stock speaker has .5 inch mounting height.
So, it'll take some doing. My ideal would to have bigger stock-looking speaker grilles. They don't have to match stock exactly--I'm no purist. I just don't want it to look like I have anything to rip off. If they don't fit and I can't find some matching stock-looking bigger grilles, maybe I'll try to make my own and paint to match. Seeing as my replacement upholstery is shot, maybe I'll redo all the upholstery including the door panels.
