My cooling fan does not turn on after the engine is off. Consequently, when I jump back in and turn it on the temp gauge is marking close to the red zone. Luckily it comes down but being so close to the red is not a good feeling especially when I may be driving in 100+ degree weather. Any diagnosis or repair suggestions? Thanks

cooling fan is not to cool the motor, just to cool the carb and line and i suppose the manifolds.

Yep, very common on both counts. Others may tell you that the rise in motor temp is a sign of a stuck thermostat, but it's just risidual heat build up because coolant is sitting, not moving past the gauge (I think - could be wrong though) - so long as your temp drops after startup, you're fine.
Get that carb cooling fan fixed as soon as possible. The heat and the vapor lock it causes makes a mess of the carb and can have other ill effects as well (I blew out a fusable link because I got mad and ran the starter too long as a result of no gas in the carb.)

If your truck has an electric fan, it's aftermarket. Really no reason to have it running after you've shut down. Stock is a mechanical fan.
Your carb cooling fan is a totally different thing. It's mounted on the driver's side fender well.

I have a 62 with an inoperative electric fan. Mine blows on the intake. I have checked the temp sensing unit and cleaned it off. I am unable to locate a fuse. I want mine to work too.

search the threads, but I'm thinking that Landpimp said his 62's cooling fan hardly ever kicks on.
You could test it by running a hot wire from the fan to the bat and make sure it kicks on.
Also check your FSM and see if it has a testing proceedure in it.

my cooling fan almost never turns on, on either the 62 or 80, I has but its VERY seldom.
on the 40-60's it kicks on EVERYTIME I turn it off.
check dome light fuse on 60 and maybe 62, I think someone said its tied to that.

hits 85 seldom in WA..........so thats prolly why mine never kicks on 
but I do recall it taking a while to kick on after shut down(when it does kick on) Now on the 2f's it kicks on RIGHT away.

The 85 degrees is just a guestimate to get in the ballpark on my part. It really doesn't
get much of a workout on mine since I drive the 40 so often in nice/warm weather.
Obviously the carb fan is going to run more in Mo. than in Wa. It should anyway!

Its pretty typical for the wire going to the sensor (located under manifold towards firewall) to burn in two. Check it first.
