I've had this FJ 60 kickn' around for about 3 years now. Bought it just before being mobilized with the New Mexico National Guard in 2003. I haven't done a thing to it except replace the battery on it. The guy I bought it from was a new acquaintance and really needed the dough in a pinch to move back to New Zealand. I gave him 1,500 for it. Sooo, to be honest I don't really know what I have to deal with...
A couple of things are for sure. The PS is going out. It moans and groans getting really tight when RPMs are low... it has to be replaced. I've been told by a mechanic buddy of mine that the SP is going bad. I've experienced indications of such as it had smoked the belt on it a couple of times before finally busting it. I guess they just start to seize up when they go bad. Well the same Mech buddy says you can "gut them out" (SPs) so that you can just run the pulley necessary to run everything else in the engine... True? How important is that smog pump in terms engine function. Although NM doesn't have any sort of annual smog reg requirements, I am concerned with contributing any ill effects to the environment. So bypassing the SP is probably out of the question by my standards... just want to put this idea entirely to rest.
Also, I can't drive this thing for more than 5 minutes before my clothes are saturated with the smell of exhaust... SM responsible?

Honest and mechanic... those two words are hard to come by in the same sentence in NM...Ha ha. I'll take your word for it as its as any other chance I have in these parts... yeah, definitly interested. Where boutz your mechanic? Alamo?

I tell you what. After he is done with my rig, I'll tell him I have a buddy who needs work done on it. I have a neighbor who worked on stealths for 20 years and recently retired. He opened up a machine shop specializing in race engines. The shop next to his is the mechanic he recommended. These guys are in La Luz, NM and work out in the boonies where no one can find them. They are start up businesses and will not do you wrong as they are trying to create a name for themselves. Above that, my neighbor will not allow them to do a half ass job considering he made the recommendation. I can directly give you his phone number or I can introduce you, which is better if you ask me.

You should be able to pick up a rebuilt smog pump for about $80 at a national chain parts store. The rebuild quality is spotty so it may take a couple tries to get one that actually works well. Gutting it is an option but since you have to pull it anyhow, you might as well have it functional. The supposed "gains" from gutting it are negligable. If you smelling exhaust inside then you likely need some exhaust work. Check all of the pipe joints for leaks. If the rear fenders are really rotted away, you might be getting exhaust sucked into the truck through the rust holes in back.

Like I said earlier, just haven't done much to it... geez almost nothing at all! There's a list of things I should do to it before I consider driving it for any extended milage. Among those things: cranking down any bolts associated with exhaust, replacing transmission fluids (or at least making sure that their topped off), take closer look at cooling system i.e. water pump, and radiator....
Anything else? What did I miss other than the obviouse toon up and motor oil change?
Oh, before I forget to ask, how important is that auxillary fan mounted to the left of the engine compartment?
What would it mean if I've never seen or heard it kick on?

First thing to do would be a change of all the fluids and lube it. Since you don't know how long they've been in there it's just better to be safe. Next a complete tune up and check the valve clearance. Sounds like a new exhaust may be in order or alot of bandages to temporarily fix it.

The fan mounted to the firewall is the carb cooling fan. After 10 minutes of driving it should kick on after the key is turned off. Without this functioning you will experience vapor lock in the carb and develop a hot start problem especially as spring and summer approach.

I gutted my smog pump, but if yours is already acting up you might want to replace it. It does nothing for the engine only emissions. Slight hp gains are found from removing or gutting it but we're only talking a horsepower or two.

PS Pump
Might be old/tired. Might also just have powersteering fluid in it instead of ATF. Toyota spec is ATF. Drain/refill a couple of times. See if that helps. Also, a respected Toyota parts guy suggests some Downey fabric softener to help stop groaning. Not kidding. Just about one tablespoon.

Smog Pump
The smogified 2F engine is designed so that all of the smog stuff works together. A rebuilt SP from NAPA is ~$100. Not a bad deal. They can be gutted though. When t hey go, they seize, and it's exciting...

Exhaust smell
Could be a cracked exhaust manifold. Could be a wasted gasket. Could be a rusted exhaust system. Check for rust, etc. In my case, I just had a bunch of loose nuts on the intake/exhaust manifold. Tightend to spec, no more smell. Nothing like a no-cost fix to put a smile on your face!
