FJ60 advice needed, preventative repairs, etc...(longish)

Unfortunately, the only time I saw the guage was after I was already pulled over and it was pegged in the red after the truck was off........yikes...

Well, the head is at the machine shop. He thinks it's not cracked, but they're magnafluxing it anyway. It'll need a full rebuild. The block\lower checks out: no warping, cylinder damage, or bearing damage. Looks like I'll be up and running with a rebuilt head, new smog pump and new PS when all is said and done. From then on it'll be much more attentive weekly checking and maintenance (with the helpful guiding from this board) to keep this nightmare from ever happening again. I'm so glad I have a great shop in my area though. They consitently come through....

If your smog pump seizes while you are out somewhere, not to worry, there is an easy "limp-home" fix. There are two belts on a 60. One does the alternator/AC/waterpump and the other does the powersteering/smog pump. The alternator/AC belt will fit (perfectly) around the alternator/waterpump. These are all you need to get home.

Huh....Mine has 3 belts. The AC is by itself, the Alt and PS are on one and the Smog and Water on the third. When this happened, only the AC belt was not affected. Smog\water was shredded, Alt\PS came completely off. I could see though how you could blet it up with only two belts if you had the right size.....
