Hello! I'm a new user and new Cruiser owner. I bought this rig this past July and will be doing a diesel conversion, with a 1HZ, this fall. What I know about the conversion I have gotten off the web, which is to say not much. I've seen a couple threads about conversions in other cruiser models but nothing from someone who has done this conversion. Ideally I'd like to talk to someone who has done this conversion about parts I'll need to swap and other modifications. Can anyone help? Thanks.

complete donor vehicle will help heaps, as it's the little things that you forget about that come back to get you later, like glowplug timers and stuff, so if you get a donor, keep it till your driving the other one at least. gearbox "should" bolt up, unless the gearbox is off a 4 cylinder, and from memory, engine mounts should fit too.

I recently swapped a 1HZ into an HJ60 so I am more than willing to help you on teh 1HZ end of things. Stickboy has also done a 13B-T into an FJ60 so he can help you on the FJ60 end. He is who you want to talk to about wiring the 24V motor in a 12V truck etc. I can help you with getting the 1HZ into the 60.

For starters i can tell you that you will probably want to track down a H55F crossmember (assuming this is the tranny you will be running). I am not positive, but there may be a difference and having the right one will make the install a lot easier. Also, know the year and model of the cruiser your 1HZ combo came out of, there are differences and knowing this info is very helpful when trying to track down the right part.

Tell us more about what you have. where are you located?

There a lot of people here that know their stuff when it comes to these rigs. I'm am sure you will find the info you need. welcome!

I also want to do this swap

I someday will also do this swap however at the moment my 2F is running pretty good and I'm a broke student! But I have done some research, and read all the threads. The FJ60 is 12volts and the 1hz avaliable are 24V that is the biggest pain, you will either have to get a converter and wire it so that only the starter, glow plugs and alternator run on 24V or do what I think is the better option swap the glow plugs, alternator, starter, and relay for 12v parts from Oz. This may be more expensive, however I think you cold sell the 24v stuff to help off set the cost and in the end you wont be rewirng the entire electrical system. Plus I dont like the fact that if the converter gets wet or just shorts out your truck fries! Also you will need to weld motor mounts and rewire your Tac, temp, oil pressure. Stickboy and Glen know much more about that. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the welcome!

You guys are great! I'll tell you a little bit more about my truck. It's an 87 FJ-60 with 236,000 miles on it. The 2F still runs really well and the tranny (4 speed) is pretty solid, although I've got some leaks from the tranny and t-case. The body and interior are almost spotless. The engine I plan to purchase will be coming from Greg and Sheldon at G&S, came out of an 80, is already turbo'd, and Sheldon thought it might be 12v except for the starter. My plan is to pick up the engine when it arrives and drive to a friend's shop to do the install this fall.

After reading through most of VT's threads, I've got a couple initial questions.
1. Can I make the 2F radiator work for the HZ. It's brand spanking new and would be a shame if I couldn't use it.

2. With the switch from 4 to 5 speed and higher horse and torque can I use the same gears and drive axles?

3. VT--have you resolved your leaks? In answer to your questions, I'm in Oregon (Bend) and will be doing the install in Fortine, Montana.

Thanks.

You can use the rad but you must be creative with your hose.

I think you have 3.70 gears which would work well with the 1HZ combo.

Okay, so my 2F is sitting in the driveway and I'm not really inclined to put it back in.

How do I source a 1HZ and how much do they run?

HZ source

Water,

Check with GSCruiserparts.com, otherwise known as G&S Cruisers. I don't know what they have lined up but you may be able to get something on the same shipment my motor will be on. The other sources I found we're pretty pricey. Let me know what you find out--I may be able to pick the motor up for you.

more questions

Okay. I'm starting to get a pretty good list going for the swap. I'm just gonna keep listing questions as they occur to me.

1. The exhaust exits the FJ60 on the drivers side rear and I think I saw that the 1HZ exits on the passenger side. Is this correct, and if so, do I just need to do some pipe modifications?

2. How the *@!* do you post pictures on this site! I've tried twice to add an attachment and keep getting a "can't find the page" message. The pictures I have are not hosted. Any suggestions?

3. I plan to run biodiesel in this motor. How is that working for you Stickboy?

Thanks!

First of all, my 1HZ came out of a 73 series truck, just to clarify incase there are differences.

I am not sure how the 2F rediator is laid out. I found that when I mounted the 1HZ the fan was located farther down and to the passenger side that the 2H's fan. When i tested my rad, the fan cleared all of the rad ports, but just barely. I ended up cutting and turning the lower port so that it pointed more outward as opposed to staight up. This gave me more room to get the shroud in between. I was going to try and "modify" the old shroud, but ended up making a new one from scratch. This is recommended, save yourself the agony. I just updated my 1HZ--->HJ60 thread with a couple more pics for you.

2. With the switch from 4 to 5 speed and higher horse and torque can I use the same gears and drive axles?

Your gears and axles will be fine. I can cruise all day long at 70-75 all loaded down and still get 21+ mpg. I'd say with tires over 35" you would want to regear. I can still start out in second with 31"s.

3. VT--have you resolved your leaks? In answer to your questions, I'm in Oregon (Bend) and will be doing the install in Fortine, Montana.

For the most part I am leak free. I am still leaking a tiny bit of diesel where i tapped my fuel return into the filler neck overflow. I think I forgot teflon tape on one of the fitting threads. Other than that I had/have no leaks that tightening hose clamps haven't fixed.

Browndog,
good to hear someone else is embarking on this swap journey. Greg & Sheldon will surely treat you right with the motor. Let me know when you are coming through from Montana with the rig. I live in Moscow, Idaho and it would be not too far out of your way to swing by and show off the new rig and you could check out/compare the 13bt to a turbo'd 1hz. I was unsure which way to go at first, 1hz or 13bt, both seem like good solutions....

as for some questions you had:
1)exhaust- 13bt same issue. went to an exhaust shop and they custom bent an entire 2.5" exhaust for $220 including muffler & egt fitting. I thought about buying a mandrel bent hit and piecing the whole thing together but decided it'd be more of a pain and it really wouldn't save much money.

2)biodiesel- fantastic so far. I have the walbro pump at the tank pushing fuel through the racor filter (heated) which i decided to put in to be able to use a higher % BD in the cold months here... I have noticed that the white smoke puff on startup is gone now, even in 40 deg F temps we had the other day. I'm not sure if this is from the BD or Walbro pump...

3)i wouldn't hesitate to run the radiator from the 2f. too be sure I'd ask someone the size of the stock 1hz rad and see how it compares. that 2f radiator is pretty good sized and i think it'd work fine. as for the ports and matching the motor, i took wires and bent them in the shape i needed hoses and went to NAPA. Looked at all the hoses on the wall until i found the ones that had the shape i needed. worked slick and for about $30 or so solved my port problems since they didn't come out on the same side as the bj74 rad...

4) as for 24/12v wiring I'm of a school a little different than many folks. Having dual systems doesn't bother me and I don't mind relying on a little box converting voltages. I think it's fairly straight forward to transition from one to another and realiable too. The heavy truck industry does it all the time. I'd be curious to ask a electric motor shop how much it'd be to rewind the 24v starter to 12v. I asked about an approximate cost to rewind my 24v alternator to 12v and it was $75. So...that might be the way to go, rewind your starter and everything would be 12v. my .02.

5) What suspension do you have on the 60? If it still has the stock with that many miles and your thinking about a new one grab a Belton kit from Greg/Sheldon while you are at it. It's fantastic and much cheaper than and OME setup without all the complications most of the US ones seem to have...

Engine

Stickboy- Thanks for the info. I'll definitely let you know when I'm coming through. I'll have to stop by and buy some of your BIODIESEL!!

At this point I'm playing a waiting game for the motor. I'm sure most of you have been here before. That's all for now.
