Take the belt off and see if you can spin the clutch hub by hand.
Don't condemn the A/C pump based on a noise.
Used ones are available. New ain't gonna be cheap. Check w/cdan.

The compressors are mostly interchangeable. Get the numbers off the back and go to Napa. $200 for a compressor two years ago at Napa. Just remove the clutch and replace on the new compressor. Don't forget or neglect to replace the dryer too or you'll ruin the new compressor.

if you are not equipped to to AC repair, then not easy. IF the compressor is really bad, you must replace with a unit that has the correct bolt pattern for mounting, hose fitting locations and belt pulley head. use new o-rings on the fittings. use correct amount and type of oil for your refrigerant (are you still r-12 or have you converted to 134a?). you MUST pull a vacuum on the system and charge with proper amount of refrigerant...not possible without a manifold gauge set. wear goggles when working with refrigerant. do NOT breathe the refrigerant if you manage a leak - it can stop your heart. don't be afraid to get help. the Factory Service Manuals have a very good AC diagnostic section. u can do it with the proper tools and some knowledge.

in my experience, don't mess with anything but a Nippondenso (Denso) compressor. if your compressor self destructed, make sure you flush the entire system to remove any metal that will destroy your new compressor. fyi, run your AC a few times a month, (even if it's cold outside). the compressor also pumps oil which keeps eveything lubricated.
