hey guys,
I've just learned why my knuckles on my 72 fj40 are leaking. So I was looking at an 82' fj55 at a junk yard and noticed the discbrakes, I figured that since I have to tear the knuckle apart to get at the inner axle seal that it would be a good time to upgrade to front disc. Was wondering if the knuckles are compatible between the years and if the new brake booster needs any modifications to work?

Yes. Do a hole axle swap. You may need to change diffs.

Do a search for the disc brake conversion and you will get all the info you need.

Wait, a 1982 FJ55? No such animal, the 55 stopped in 1979 when the 60 came. Either one will give you disk brakes but the 60 will have slightly bigger birfs where you have to grind the knuckles a little bit on the inside. If it is a 55, the whole axle will swap in, but better make sure you know the year (and the diff ratio). A 60 axle will swap in but not without relocating the perches and possibly notching the pumpkin, assuming you are still sprung under.

You can keep the brake booster, or use the one off the donor, but if you get the donor's master cylinder it would be easier.

well for starters the guy at the yard told me that it was a fj55... anyways I was hoping to avoid the axle swap because I have the spring over and wanted to avoid welding new perches. I wanted to use the larger tie rod and knuckle control arms of the fj60 because the tierod and tierod ends are alot beefier, giveing more strength when pushing 38 1/2" tires(the disc brakes are a bonus) also making my draglink more compatible with power steering system allowing for lager tierod ends when they meet. how do u find the diff ratio? If i was able to get a fj55 axle with disc brakes do you know of a knuckle control arm that would match the bolt pattern hat of a fj55 but is big enough to handle a fj60 tierod?

Does the body look like a 55 or a 60? Look around on the net and you can see the difference, e.g. turn signals on a stalk for a 55, built into the grille for a 60.

If it is an FJ60, look at the build tag on the firewall (The tag on a 55 won't say anything about the axle BTW.) If it is a US model, it will say K052, an open 3.70 ratio diff. If it is K082, it's a 4.11 but these are rare in a US model FJ60 though standard in an FJ62 (four square headlights) and Canadian diesel 60's. If it says K084, forget getting anything off the truck and just tell me where it is so I can make sure no one else gets a part off this piece of junk :D

You can only get custom made arms for that. 4x4labs.com makes high steer arms that have the smaller pre79 40's and 55's. Luke can put any size of tie rod tapers in those.

yeah those damn worthless OEM locking diff's :D

I went back to the junkyard and checked out a 76 fj55 wagon, I was looking at the front axle (K082) and noticed that the where the diff and drive shaft meet it looks larger then my drive shaft and diff. but i think that I have the same 4 speed tranny. just curious wether i could maybe use that drive shaft too?

Wrong. My '82 BJ60 has 3.70's as do all others that I know of. Maybe the BJ40/42 has 4.11's.

Ah, I stand corrected.
