FJ485 Build - Limitless Modifications

I recently purchased a FJ45 Long Bed Pick Up and am feverishly looking for a wrecked/rolled locked 80 as a building platform.

My question to the 80 community is if you had an 80 series platform to build off of and didn't have to worry about the gas tank being in the way of the rear suspension or worried about coilovers being too long and entering the wagon body, and you had basically a frame with an engine and trans and axles and were to build the ultimate on/off road truck, how would you design the suspension and any other components without having to worry about running into the body or fenders etc. I'm going to be cutting up this FJ45 and extending the cab, shorting the bed etc. Really all I'm after is the shell of the 45 for the look of the truck.

I'd like to be able to do high speed both on road and off as well as rock crawling.

My other build threads for this idea can be seen here.

Let me add a few more nuggets:
Engine will likely be Toyota 1HD-T it has the same motor mounts as the 1FZ-FE.
37's-40's

(If anybody has a pic of an 80 frame with axles and an engine trans and maybe steering components, please post one)
Starting with this

I think you'll find that the drivetrain will need to move relative to the chassis in order to accomodate the body. At least that's what others have had to do.

I would 3-link the front, but keep the sway bar for on-road useage. Binksfab makes the brackets for a 3-link that are supposed to make the process fairly painless. Install your spring/coilover/etc of choice.

The rear is probably fine, but longer links and perhaps a triangulated design to eliminate the panhard couldn't hurt.

I'm actually contemplaying leafs in the rear for progressive load carrying capacity  I mean if you're gonna have a bed, you might as well be able to use it right? Going to leafs would make adjusting the wheelbase to fit the body simpler too since you wouldn't have to relocate so damn many brackets.

r083rt, I'm weighing in at 6'5" 230# Torfab has done a couple, he just had a 1HD-T 80 go on ebay for +20k. https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-trailers-sale-wanted/631578-our-1hd-t-diesel-80-series-ebay.html

Ary, I was kind of thinking something like this with a slant back look. Maybe with a soft top over the roll bars/bed. Invert the tire to the inside, use a hinge at the back so it folds down to the tailgate. Keep the tire from hanging off the back and keep the weight inside the wheels and lower without taking up bed space. Since it will be limited with roll bar and coilovers.

Food for thought

I am so jealous. That is going to be fantastic.

coilover rear end....NOW we're talking. Did you use google sketchup to design?

With nothing in the way? Three link w/ panhard up front and triangulated four link rear. Coilovers of course.

This should be fun. Cheering you on...

I'm not sure what google sketchup is, I wish I still had access to ProE, like when I worked at CAT.

Any designs that you've seen that I can take after?

Cant wait to see how this turns out Good luck

Go over into the hardcore section and do search for Project X.

In my best Jedi voice, "revive old thread, REVIVE!"

Can't one build this FrankenCruiser with the Aqualu guys? They're already making these modified boxes, stretched and shortened frames/bodies.

I'd imagine you'd buy a frame+body+box and then start swapping parts from the FJ80 or FJ Cruiser or FJ40 parts car. Get it painted and done.

If you outsourced this to a shop, I can't imagine the assembly and painting would cost more then $20-25k assuming the shop is doing just body to frame assembly and some painting; $35-40k if they're doing all that and finishing the build with motor/suspension/interior (depending on condition of parts etc).

Anyone have any experience with that? I'd love to build this with the Toy 4.0 motor and 6spd and optional stuby soft top for the bed rack and when I have to pick up the kids.
