Looks like my sending unit finally died out on me. All week long my gauge was fluctuating from full to empty and so forth on a full tank then from 1/2 tank to empty after using a few gallons. Now that I drove it one week it reads empty when it should be reading 1/2 full.

So I took the sending unit out and when I move the float arm from "empty" to 3/4 of the way I get a reading of 12V then it drops to 5V from a bit past 3/4 to "full". Looking at the gauge at the same time, it remains on empty when moving the float from "empty" to 3/4. The gauge will finally move to full when it senses the 5V.

The wagon came w/an aftermarket sending unit installed where you have to bend the float arm to give the proper reading + it also bolted on correctly. I think I threw it away once I got a hold an original sending unit 13 yrs. ago.

Any way to rehab the stock sending unit? The ground is good, the gauge is good (I tried a second one as well).

Anyone know of an aftermarket sending unit that will fit an FJ45LV wagon gas tank?

Thanks

I used a later model sending unit to match my later gauge cluster. I had to redrill the wholes in the sender though. Fit good besides that.

My wagon is a '64. Would I be able to use the '72 and below sending unit, i.e. is the resistance the same between a '64 and '72?

I see that a sending unit for the years '66-'72 is offered.

I believe a 64 cluster uses a different resistance than the replacement (66-72) sender available. Maybe you could swap out the fuel gauge with a later unit and make it all work?
