Hi There, I have an 83 FJ45 landcruiser troopcarrier that, sadly, I need to sell because we have 2 young kids and it is not really kiddy friendly (according to my wife).

There are some pics attached. It has factory power steering, factory air con, front disc brakes and full floater rear diff. I have also installed forward facing rear seats (from a BJ42) with seatbelts and compliance plate.

I runs on propane and/or gasoline. I have added electronic ignition and a tacho. It has spent most of its life in the country so there is no serious rust. There are a couple of small spots coming through lately on the side panels and rear corners - all easily fixed.

It is my 'everyday' car and runs very well. That also means it is a bit grubby, as I used it for farm work.

It has been well looked after and I don't really want to sell it, but that is life.

The catch is that it is RHD and in Brisbane, Australia. I don't want to sell it here because people just use them as beach fishing trucks until they rust away to nothing.

I would prefer to sell it in Canada or the US where it will be looked after and maybe even restored.

I am not chasing top dollar - just want to make sure it gets a good home. Probably ask about US$5000 plus shipping costs.

Thanks

Hi Guys

Thanks for the interest in my rig. I have emailed you some more pics. Not enough space left to post them.

Yes I can drive it to the Port of Brisbane for shipping.

Not sure of the mileage. The tank is 80 litres, which means it holds 68 useable litres of propane. Depending on driving conditions I get about 350-400kms from a tank. My main reason for converting is that propane is dirt cheap over here compared to gasoline.

I installed piranha electronic ignition inside the distributor which means it stays well-tuned and so I have never had any worries about the mileage.

I have owned it for about 10 years. It came from a guy in Roma (western Queensland).

cheers

That is damned good fuel economy on gas- I don't even get that on petrol in my 40. How have you tuned the gas system? I have a GM HEI distributor on mine, and a 5 speed, and I am lucky to get 25 litres/100 kms- you are getting 17 litres/100 kms! You are getting 12.3 Miles per US Gallon (assuming 350 kms and 65 litres), where I am lucky as hell to get 9.5 MPG on gas. At 400 kms, you would be getting 14.5 MPG. I need to know your secrets! What is your fuel economy on petrol?

Cheers,

Josh

Hi Josh

I think we have met once at a wreckers yard in Brisbane, maybe about 5 years ago. I think I recognise Patches from an email you sent to me afterwards. I think you may even have put a pic of my truck on your website? At that time it had a steel exo-skeleton that I have since removed.

Anyway, mileage. I am not very good with these numbers so I may be totally wrong with the figures I have quoted. I don't think my mileage is that much better than similar rigs. Mine has a stock distributor but with electronic points. The gas is an IMPCO set up, and I get it tuned on a dyno at a propane specialist who specifically adjusts the mixtures for economy. And he says he adjusts my valve clearances slightly differently to spec, but I am not sure why. Also I have a 3F motor which I think is more efficient than the 2F? And I drive like an old woman, so that may have something to do with it.

G'day Dave,

Yes, we did meet at a wreckers in Brissy, but I reckon it was more like 8 years ago. I remember your rig well, and somewhere I still have the photos of it with the exo-skeleton. That was when I bought the 60 series power steering for mine.

Doesn't your father have a Cruiser ute as well? Does he still have that?

I reckon it is the 3f that does that- or the tuning. I have tuned my gas system myself, so there is a good chance that I have it too rich. Maybe I need to get it looked at by someone who actually knows what they are doing.:hhmm: With the cost of gas here (yes, it is cheaper than petrol, but gas still costs more in Australia than petrol does in the US) I reckon it is worth having an expert take a look at it.

I'm sad to hear you are selling your Cruiser- hopefully you will be getting another model. Give us a shout if you are ever down in Adelaide. I should be here or in Hobart for another two years or so.

Cheers,

Josh

I should also mention that I am willing to load the back up with spare parts before I ship it. Cruiser parts are easier to come by here in Oz, and if you are shipping a truck, you may as well fill the space. A buyer can just tell me what parts they are chasing, and I can hunt them down (if I don't have them already) and throw them in the back. The buyer would just have to cover the purchase cost of the part (unless I already have it, in which case it would be free).

Hope that makes sense!

Be careful with that. The Aussie ports and tow drivers are cracking down on having extra parts in the back. You can get away with a few smaller things that look like they go with the truck, but putting in a pile of stuff is frowned upon. There's a chance they won't load it on the boat.

Not trying to ruin your post but just trying to save some possible trouble. If it's put in a shipping container then you can fill it with stuff.

cheers!

Thanks for the warning, John. Would have been embarrassing to have the old girl rejected at the boat!

So I will revise that offer to just smaller things that look like they go with the truck. I guess there are still hard-to-get parts in that category.

Also, after the initial flurry of interest in my truck, things have died off a bit. It seems that people are turned off by the fact that the paint job is not the original colour. And that is fair enough. In hingsight I wish I had kept it the stock colour, however the original paint was getting thin and chipped and I wanted to preserve the old girl with a respray. It was about 3 years ago. At that stage I did not intend to sell it EVER. So I took the opportunity to go for my favourtie cruiser colour (which is normnally only found on diesels, I think). I can see how this may deter some people but I can honestly say that the respray was done as a preventative measure, not in order to "hide" anything. I still have all of the original badges, decals, etc, but I have only put some of them back on. There is some minor rust on the body, as I have said, but it is all isolated spots and fixable. I can send detailed pics of the spots. It is still one of the cleanest rigs I have seen over here.

The chassis is clean. One of the first things I did when I bought it 10 years ago was have the underbody and chassis steam cleaned and a rust protection sprayed on, which is now starting to flake away but it has done its job.

And I am negotiable on the price. Will accept US$4000.

I don't really want to see it parted-out, but I guess the price is getting so low that that might become a viable option for someone. My preference is for it to be restored (and for me to have visitation rights one day!)

cheers

That is a steal. It would be about $8K including shipping to the USA (worst case scenario)

Paint is cheap and easy at towerpaint.com. Painted many cruiser interiors for next to nothing. paint shouldn't be a hang up for people.

The economy and the fact it's the holidays probably is the rub.

This is exactly what I am looking for.....I am just on the wrong side of the US though.

Hi again,

Over the weekend I dug all of the spare parts out of my shed to remind myself what is there. The parts that will come with the truck are:
- rear decals (round reflectors, "TOYOTA" badge, "4 Wheel Drive" badge)
- original radio
- original one-and-a-half passenger seat
- starter motor
- rear jump seats (x2)
- bib (clean)
- set of rear doors (rusty)
- various hinges, latches, nuts, bolts, brackets, etc

I have taken pics of all these bits that I can send.

Also, if preferred, I can source and fit a set of the original factory split rims that came with this model.

Dave

Hi all

The truck is taking longer to sell than I had hoped. I have had lots of people expressing interest but no-one taking the plunge.

I really don't want to drag this out, so I have put it on eBay with a reserve of AU$6000. I think that is about US$3600.

The item number is 160304083654

If I went any lower, I'd be better off parting it out!

cheers
Dave

Dave,

Although I'm a little sad to see it on e-bay you gotta do what you gotta do!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Mot :)

Dave,

I'm surprised that it didn't go!

Good luck with the sale... I might have to take another look at the pictures that you were so kind to have e-mailed me and put on my thinking cap again!! ;)
