Guy – bit of background. Love 4wding and camping and the 40 series trucks of which I own three with the misses - my skills are really in body restoration and somewhat lacking in mechanicals/engines.
Our 83 FJ45 Troop Carrier is our daily runner but also set up for touring. She runs the original 2f with a gas system (so duel fuel). To improve the fuel consumption I have done the points, extractors, cleaned up the plugs. Made a small difference to fuel consumption but the 2f is now is knocking and oil consumption ever increasing (as well as decorating the cement).
I know the best option is to go a diesel as a replacement but can not afford that swap.

Is this a suitable plan.
There is a plethora of 3f’s from 80 series with around 300,000- 400,000k,s. Take a 3f and replace the 2f. Convert to gas / petrol and HEI. Replace 5 speed with the 4 speed but keep the diffs etc the same. Obviously want to keep power steering, air con and heater.

I am out of my comfort zone with this one.

A reco 3f is $3000-$5000 + carb work $400 + hei $500 + $install we are talking big dollars.

Be great to hear your thoughts. Would be awesome to simply pop the 3f in and everything just works but I’m not a dreamer and would like a project plan with parts list and what matches what etc. We are in Sydney Australia so perhaps someone has used the services of a reputable engine swapper they could recommend?

Another option i am tossing around the is 2f rebuild with a 3f head.

Thanks in advance and love to hear your thoughts
