Found a pretty clean '92 that for some reason I am really drawn to. Relatively low miles, interior is in great shape and it's priced pretty good. It's at a little lot, so I called about it the other day and the receptionist said they took it in on consignment and the salesman that knew about it wasn't in but she did know it has a transmission issue and that was all she knew about it at the time. I know the FZJ80 fairly well having owned 2 but have no clue as to the drivability of the 3FE. I'm sure it's noticeably slower but what kind of highway speeds should I be expecting? I don't want nor expect a rocket but would like at least to get a 70 mph top cruising speed. Also are there any known transmission issues that I should look for an easy fix? Something similar to the kick down cable adjustment on the FZJ80. If the tranny is toast how hard is it to find a replacement? @NCFJ would you have one I could pick up from a swap?

@fj40z I have a trans but do not know the condition. I would lean more toward it being bad than good and I have it slated to go to the core man when I head that way next. You are welcome to it.

Thanks Stan, I'll in investigate and see if it's needed

How good a deal are you getting?

Well I went back to the little car lot today to check out the 80 and basically learned nothing more about it. The guy that knows about it wasn't there so I heard the same story about it has a transmission problem but really didn't know what it was other than she thought she had overheard it wouldn't go in reverse. She did unlock it so I could check it out inside and start it up. The inside was really clean but when I started it up it sounded like a threshing machine. Popped the hood while it was running and there was tons of play in the belt but everything else looked really good. Very little rust and the carfax checked out very good thanks to @DeeRex I'm still interested because it's so clean and I feel like I could get into really cheap but I'm just about to write it off due to informational frustration.

I've always admired how you jump on a deal when you see it.

Time to jump! We got smart peoples here .... we can fix anything.

BTW .... Reverse on many (not all) trannys is indication clutches are gone, i.e. rebuild or replace.

Rice

EDIT .... I just re-read your last post .... no reverse AND a thrashing sound points to torque convertor.

H55 swap !!!

What Eric said!!!

Anyway for speed. They are not bad.

Mine was geared with 4.88's but with very heavy 39" XMLs. So I had a taller gear than stock. I could still accelerate to keep up with merging and traffic and could go north of 80 if I wanted to but mostly cruised at 70-75 if traffic allowed.

Not a bad idea on the h55, have been toying with the idea of putting one in the 60. Last I heard the h55 is between 2-3k does that sound about right? Trying to get an idea of what else would need to be done and a good ball park of what kind of budget would need to be expected. @Rice I'm pretty sure the thrashing sound was from the way loose belt.

I I think they are a hair over 2k if you use our discount at Toyota. Not sure on exact price but closer to 2 than 3. But with the 80 you would need to source other parts as well.

10-4 on the belts. Did you try getting it to pull for you in forward and reverse when you had it running?

Gotcha, any idea on what else would be needed? I'm assuming slave and clutch master cylinder, bell housing?

No I should have but didn't. I was so aggravated that I go by there 2 times a day on my way to work and back but made a special trip back up there at lunch to try and catch the guy that runs the place, to talk to someone about it and failed after I called and said I was coming to see it that I kinda just left. I know you've seen it from the road but if you haven't looked it over next time you go by take a peek at it and see what you think. It would really clean up well.

3f bellhousing + clutch cover from the same year truck
60 series flywheel
Clutch Kit – Clutch, Pressure Plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, and alignment tool.
Brake and Clutch Pedals clutch pedal bracket
Throw out bearing hub
Clutch fork from 85-87 60 series, fork ball, and boot.
Clutch master and slave cylinders
Front driveshaft from 60 series
Crossmember from 85-87 60 series
Transmission Shifter

The 85-87 part is from a an old thread where someone said those parts would work with some mods(the crossmember that is) on an 80. Also I think it is the same in a thread where someone swapped a H42 into an 80 and that was a part list.

Only part I don't have saved on my PDF was the T-case.

A part time would work but in other markets the 3F 80 was full time with a 5 speed as well so not sure what T-case would work. @beno would most likely have the answer for that.

my 3fe will do 80mph all day long on flat roads. and can be a pig in the mountains. but when I need it to I can stomp the gas....and watch the gas gauge accelerate.....
