fj40 with th400 d300 would drive shaft be to short for a daily driver ?

Im working on a 71 fj40 soa 37" tires sbc 350 th400. Building it to be a daily driver/wheeler for trails like rubicon/sierra trek/dusy type stuff. I need help deciding between stock transfer case /orion someday with stock rear axle or dana 300 with centered landcruiser axle. What problems would i have with the dana 300 ? would the drive shaft be to short, bad angle, bad vibrattion what about speed o cable? I dont want to move the rear axle back more than a couple inches if i half to. Im ready to buy a trans to transfer case adapter and dont know which to buy landcruiser or d300.

thanks for any help

are you running the stock gear cluster? d300 is a great case are you going to build a center hybrid axle or what axle are you thunking of going with this combo? orion is your best chioce for bolt on. Of couse there is the added lenght of adapter and Im not sure which you are planning to go with and the difference in lenght between d300 and toyota.

i'd run the orion for several reasons......

the rear output on the d300 is up high, right inline with the trans output. so that makes for more rear d-line angle and less u-joint life.

you'll need a centered rear axle with the d300, adding to the expense which will surpass the orion by a lot. figure in the d300, lower gears, twin sticks, possibly the 32 spline outputs, custom drivelines, rear axle,..........

besides, who in their right mind would bolt a jeep part on a cruiser?! LOL

actually, i used to have a d300 in my 40 but it had a d60 rear axle........

Thinks for the info. I all ready have parts to make a centered axle. And i dont have any drive shafts yet. Just dont want to upgrade later.

yea i here ya about the jeep thing

:flipoff2:

i think that a centered rear output has less drive shaft issues, because during articulation the angle of the CV will not drop down as much as the offset case.

Orion's are cool now that they have the HD Version.. its a toss up i think. Dana 300 gives you Front Dig Ability, and more options for adapters and aftermarket support. Orion is a bolt in and go sort of thing, less down time and Fab work.

Extending the rear axle of my truck backward has given me much better stability on climbs! dont shy against it.. with properly Trimmed fenders, i think it makes an FJ40 look better because it centers the tire in the Tub better!

Im not woried about down time it's just a rolling frame right now. Motor and trans are waiting for me to weld in mounts. I like the idea of a centered output transfer case to . I not trying to build a superduper rock crawler just something fairly stout the first time with a lot of money . Im afraid of getting "stuck" with an offset axle mainly because i"ve never wheeled a cruiser before. I think my driveing style is pretty easy but if theres a hard way i'll try it i just try not to bash around alot. Ive been searching and cant find how the d300 would be driving on the road.

There have been many jeeps DD to the mall, so they are street proven!

I don't think I would be as worried about the centered or side output as much as I would worry about the length of TH400 tranny and Adapter Plate. Seems to me that you would end up with pratically nada rear driveshaft even if you did ease the rear diff back abit??????, that's why we never made a TH400 adapter. The TH350 is almost 6" shorter. The 700R4 is about 4" shorter and a screaming better choice---lower first gear, overdrive high gear!!!!!!!!

actually the 400 is about 2 1/2" longer than the 350. and about an 3/4 longer than the 700r.
I ran that combo back in the eighties when that was the best ratio transfer available. I had about 3" lift a
centered 9" , 18" non C/V driveshaft . The spicer 1310's only gave me about 25,000 miles of life at that angle. I imagine it would last longer with a c/v driveshaft. You might consider a high pinion centered diff,
either a hi-8 from currie or a high pinion dana 44 if you're going s/o
