Are you sure the disc is correctly orientated?( on backwards)
I've been trying no not to get into this discussion due to all the threads on here that talk about this, but I think I need to jump in. The attached picture is my clutch plate with the side showing I put facing the flywheel. I realize the immediate response is going to be I put it in backwards because the "male" side of the splined section in the center should be facing the flywheel. Well, I purchased my clutch kit from Cruiser Corps and the side that is pictured specifically had stamped on it, which cannot be seen in picture, "this side facing flywheel". I even called CC and explained my delemma and they told me they always put in clutch plate according to the direction stamped on center plate. It seemed to make sense to me too because when I test fitted the clutch plate with the side pictured toward the transmission, it appears to me the center plate (with springs) was hitting the bolts on the flywheel.
After comparing pictures from other threads, my old and new clutch plate, I submit that it is not the direction of the splined center that should dictate which way a clutch plate is installed, but rather the side of the clutch plate that the center plate (containing the springs) that is raised compared to the clutch plate mating surface needs to be installed away from the flywheel. In my case, the side that is shown in the picture was installed facing the flywheel.
I'm assuming that with many different manufacturers of parts today, not all parts will look the same. With that being said, does the "male" splined section serve a purpose by facing the flywheel?
The second picture is what came off my FJ40. Notice the side pictured has the "male" side of the splined section on the side of the plate that the center plate is flush with the mating surface. The side pictured was facing the flywheel.

@Humpst , did you get the clutch to work correctly with the new clutch disk installed? I too, purchased a new clutch kit (power torque from oreillys. Came with an Aisin pressure plate even! PN: KF559-01) and the new clutch disk has the same issue as yours: the splined hub protrudes more on the transmission side (same side as raised portion on the clutch disk, called the spring cage) than the flywheel side. Called the manufacturer to see if there was a defect in production and the rep said that was per the drawings they had. Am ready to install, but wanted some feedback before I did if there were any real issues with that modified design. Thanks!

It seems that my clutch plate did finally release from the flywheel with use. I don’t recall the last time I had an issue getting it to go into first or reverse because of grinding.

hey guys im having similar issue on the 79’. all gears will engage but 1&2. truck sat for 15 years. tried all the 4x gears and N but 1st and 2nd will not engage at all. No clutch work has been done except slave and master. worked great before.

ideas?

air in the lines most likely.

edit, is this with the motor running or off?

1 and 2 were siezed under the shifter where they slide back and forth to actuate the gears. I was able to free it up after some hammering on it. There was a bit of corrosion around the shafts on the housing where they slide when shifting. Works great now thanks
