My 1980 FJ40 has had a long term problem I have been struggling with. It sometime stalls when stopping and other times it is fine. It is more frequent when it is cold, but it does occur sometimes well after the engine is warmed up. Otherwise it runs fantastic. The intake manifold gasket is new and I did not see any obvious problems with the manifold. I know the fuel level is okay through the site glass. I do not think it is the carburetor since it was rebuilt a few years ago and I would not expect it to be the source of an intermittent problem like I am having. I have checked out the idle soleniod valve and that is not it. I have also checked out the vacuum/EGR system to the best of my ability. Although I still suspect that it is vacuum leak related. Any suggestions on what it might be or how I should proceed with diagnosing the problem?

Does pulling the choke out eleviate the issue?

You said it "sometimes stalls while stopping". Does it only stall when stopping or does it also stall while driving down the road or on the trail? If it is just when coming to idle it sounds like it might be the carb linkage or adjusting screws, (ie. idle mixture screw or throttle linkage). Also check the vacuum with a tester. If you are sure it's not carb related I would give a good look at your wiring connected to your starter solenoid and ignition coil. I had a loose wire on my solenoid that kept stalling mine.

that happened to me in mine, my carb was all messed up, i would suggest getting a carb rebuild kit, my F engine used to stall at every stop. sor has them,, but you will need both that they offer

Pulling the choke out can prevent it from stalling and is absolutely necessary when first starting it. It also seems to take longer than it should to warm up were I do not need the choke. This makes me think it is a air leak. It really is not the stopping when the stall can occur, but anytime I deaccelerate or let off the gas and put in the clutch. With the clutch disengaged the vehicle motion obviosly keeps the motor running. I think the next step is to check the vacuum with a gage prior to looking at the carb. I will also look for electrical shorts.
