After years of toying around with my 1972 FJ40 rebuild, we finally have gotten serious about correcting problems and refining some items.

We decided to take some advice from many people on Ih8mud as we "refined" the stereo in the FJ. One goal was to get the speakers off the floor, where they frequently get kicked.... and make sure the jump seats are useful.

I'm an open source guy... so, I felt that contributing back is important. So, here is an image of the rear speaker enclosures we built. We shaped MDF to the rear door panel, lifted the speaker rings and finshed with glass, bondo and bed coating to match the interior.

This is great. Can't wait to see the final pics. I'm currently using a set of cheap 6x9 enclosures behind the rear seats (on the floor), but was considering building an integrated tool box / speaker box under the length of the jump seats, with a separate forward compartment for the speakers.

I'm happy with my front speaker mounts where I fabricated a metal bracket to position the speakers in the side kick panel area just below the dash, but my rear design is lacking.

The front door pods are still in process... but we did the same sort of thing. We took MDF and matched it to the door panel, glassed the ring in to fire the speaker appropriately and we will spray it to match. The sub it based on a similar box I saw on a previous thread... except it fires down.

I will take pictures of the entire stereo build when we finish it up...

I attempted to upload install pics last night, but the upload failed. So, I posted the front and rear install photos on Flickr. You can check them out here -

We are finishing up the stereo install this weekend, thanks to my good friend, Lou. Also, thanks to some ideas from the community on IH8MUD... we built a subwoofer enclosure that sits under the passenger seat in place of the old gas tank. It is a combination of 3/4 MDF and fiberglass.

WOW!! Awesome looking enclosures, can you shoot some quick pics of the sub box and link them like you did these?
