I've been looking, looking, and looking some more for a FJ40 in Texas. It doesn't have to be pretty, I would like it to be able to run. I would like something that hasn't been modded too much and has the original engine. Very little to no bondo. I had a really nice one lined up out of state but my bank put a ton of stipulations on the sale and I'm basically stuck buying one in Texas. Found a good price on a local one but a flipper from Cali beat me to it. This is my last resort... My eyes have started to wander over to the old Range Rovers...

Thanks,
Joel

Thank you

Thank you both - I had seen the one in College Station - I'd have to remove that stand to park it in the old garage - it would be great for the inevitable alien/zombie apocolypse though. Seriously, it looked like it would leave quite a few holes in the body.

Unfortunately, my bank put a bunch of stipulations on me being able to buy out of state. Basically would have to have the original title and vehicle in state and having completed the out-of-state inspection before they'd release payment to the seller.

The upside is that I have a great interest rate...

I'm not sure how to close this thread, but it looks like I'm the proud new owner of a 1974 soft top, without the top and, more importantly, no rust holes. Thanks to all of those that responded to me. I look forward to referencing this site in my new quest to restore my fj.

Well, you gonna post up some details on your score?

My new FJ40

Here's what I understand:
It's a one owner 1974 Soft Top. The original owner had it special ordered from Japan. He met it in California and drove it back to his ranch in Texas, where he used it mainly for hunting (He drilled a shotgun holder into the dash. There's also two holes on the sidesteps where he had drilled holes to put poles on it to turn it into a mobile deer blind.)
He towed it where-ever he went and then used it mainly to hunt. It has 27000-odd original miles on the original motor. It's a 4-speed + reverse so I guess it makes it a five-speed?
I got it from his grandson who inherited from his grandfather. He only put about 70 miles on it driving it around the ranch. The rest of the time it was in a barn.
The original paint is there (the light green) and it has the original soft doors I guess. The canvas rotted off and the grandfather put plywood on them - they are metal with plastic windows that you can slide down. They also have the mirrors on the door.
It has all of the original seats but missing the headrests on the front. It also has the original center console.
The carb needs to be rebuilt, the brakes need to be gone over, and the gas tank needs to be replaced. I also need to go through the hoses - they are mostly original and rotting. The only rust on it (besides the gas tank) is surface rust. I've looked at a lot of fj's and this is the cleanest one I've seen as far as holes. There are none. There are some dents in the front fenders and a small one in the hood but all bangable.

Anyways, the grandson sold it to me for 8k and basically wanted to give it to somebody who won't flip it and who is in Texas. I'm not too mechanically inclined but I'm looking forward to learning on this beast. If everything goes as planned, it's going to a family heirloom. Got to leave something behind besides bounced checks, you know?

That's what I know about it - I'm so excited that I might go sleep in it tonight...

Here she is - one on the trailer and one in the garage... Wife nixed the whole "I'm gonna sleep in the FJ tonight." Sumthin' about the West Nile Virus and me acting like a dork...
