I have a late 76 FJ40 and im trying to get the seat covers off so i can rebuild the front seat but im having trouble getting the head rests off. I know this is probably a dumb question but does anyone know how to get these damn things off?

It can be tough !!

I had my seats out of the 40, on the ground with one foot planted in the center of the seat. Pull up and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. It eventually came out. NO there is no button to push and no catch you need to trip. They sort of just fit into a groove. I initially used a little PB blaster shot down each shaft and let them sit a bit. Sometimes there is a little rust if they've been exposed to the elements. Good luck !!

edit: Oh and I found it seemed to work better if you were pulling the headrest towards the front of the seat. Hope you get the picture.

There are several small grooves on the back of each post that index the headrest at several heights. Just push/pull them forward and yank them up. Sometimes you need to get a little physical with them, but they'll come out.

First, with a small screwdriver...push it inside the back side of the plastic collar. This will pop up the front. Take a larger screwdriver and pry up the bottom of that collar to release.
Next take a large screwdriver and pry up on the backside of the white plastic sleeve...this will release the shaft. Both steps apply to each side if the headrest.
