I was looking at a '72 Cruiser tub the other day that a guy was selling, he and I were wondering if it was a factory soft top? It had an extra bracket in the back on the wheel well with a hole in it where you could see a tube resting spot in the bottom where someone would have inserted a hoop support for a soft top. Also had webbing tie down mounts, three per side on the outside rounded rear area next to the lower doors.

My question is: does this mean that it is indeed a factory soft top model, or on the early 40's was this just standard equipment in case the owner wanted to run a soft top???

Asking for your help and knowledge, thanks!

There is a few things you can look at #1 does it have a tail gate? does the door hinges have a cut on the top? I can add a few more but with out those I doubt it was a factory soft top.

Yeah that's the problem, it's very incomplete... it is pretty much a rolling chassis with a tub from the firewall back, no doors, no top, no hood, fenders, etc. so I'm just going off what I've seen which isn't much!

factory body would have holes on the bottom sill plate for hinges if holes are on side of rear body 6 on each side then its not a soft top body .it wont matter you can drill holesfor the swing out gates if you have amby door then its a lot more work ggo luck

FJ40 Soft Top

I have just restored a Factory soft top. I changed from a tailgate to rear half doors. One tell tale sign is beside of the dash there is a hoop on each side. This is where factory straps were attached and ran to the back of the seats to keep the passengers inside.

Here are pictures of one: http://www.fototime.com/inv/C71968C3B6AB491
