New Poster... Hey Ya'll and thanks ahead of time for any help. I've got a '72 FJ40 that is currently getting an off the frame restoration (be done in 3months). It will have a 3"-4" lift after it's all said and done. I'm putting a 350 performance engine in it and have found a 700R4 transmission that I can get my hands on from a friend. However, a close friend of mine advised me that there is a possibility that the 700R4 may be too long. Has anybody made this conversion or known of anybody who has? What are the downfalls. NOTE: 95% of my driving will be highway and 5% light/medium offroad.

Thanks,

Scott

That's the best part! I have heard the same thing about the rear driveshaft being too short. One fix, since you are doing new springs is to mount your rear axle farther back. Either reversing the springs or moving the hangers back.
A rear CV driveshaft is probably a good thing, too. Probably not that much of a problem for a DD.

My friend had one in his FJ40. He moved the engine forward a bit so that it would fit. He did not need to move his axle back. Since it is an automatic, you can pretty much move it forward without having too many issues. It makes it nice anyway because now the fan is closer to the radiator.

Just my two cents....

I am doing something similar right now..

Adding the adapters will add length, but that will not be a big issue as you can moce the engine or shorten the drive shaft ..

700R is a larger tranny and might need new yoke assembly as this big tranny leaves very little, to no clearance for the front output shaft of the T-case..

Best of luck!!

You'll need to move the engine up by a fair measure ... 6+ inches to keep a fair length to the driveline. Just be sure to mock it all up, measure it a dozen times, and then make it happen.
