Looking at possibly changing over my 40 to a Diesel. Anyone have any suggestions on what is the best route - stock Toyota? - cummings? - international? I currently run a 350 chevy, sm420 tranny, 68 t case, 4.11 gears, detroit lockers, 35 bfg's

From what I've seen the Toyota Diesels are as expensive anything else or more so all said and done. I think a Cummings would look good ; )
I would say go with something that parts are readily available for (Toyota Diesels aren't : / )

1HZ with a turbo. some parts can be had from NA dealers. Toyota still produces them so at the least you can get parts from Japan if you need to. Or send a PM to lynchmob here on mud and ask what he's got in portland. I am pretty sure he has a 1PZ.

I am a fan of the IDI Toyotas (1HZ/HD-T/PZ), but they have timing belts (that toyota made about as hard to change as an oil filter) and shims for valve adjustment. Everything else is simple mechanical. A 3-wire, mechanical motor.

The Cummins and DI (B/3B/H/12H-T) toyotas are pretty rattle/noisy. The IDI motors are a smooth rumble. The 12H-T is pretty popular but had a much shorter production run so parts/motors are even harder to source. The 4 or 6cyl cummins may need a body lift to clear the pan.

Swap-wise a 6.2 Chevy may be the easiest with your current setup.

Ultimately, though, I would recommend against a diesel. Money would be better spent upgrading your motor (fuel injection?) and drivetrain to what you need, and installing a bigger or aux fuel tank for range. It will be much cheaper with the same outcome. 5.3-6L Vortecs are another good option.

Welcome to our So Or JSC chapter :), Im not the person to talk to about these things, but wanted to say hello.

Says you...

Now think about it, who does this "esh" guy think he is?

Do you think he actually owns all those rigs in his sig line?

Yup, he does and the HZ in his 62 is sweet. I have put a lot of thought into a diesel swap and would suggest an OEM diesel in a 40 or the 3.3 cummins or maybe a 6AT but those are hard to find and even harder to find in good working order. I rode in one that had a 6AT and it was pretty impressive. A Toyota 3b with a turbo would be good too, I know there are later versions more turbo friendly. The half cuts from SOR aren't too bad of a deal if you can transport yourself to save some $$$. lynchmob has a PZ for sale in the classifieds with an H151(?) tranny.. Go check Proffits and see what they charge for a swap with the 4BT cummins... it ads up and they aren't really gauging their customers IMOP.
You could swap in a 6.2 chevy but most of those you'll find are worn out, if you find a good one you won't impress many folks as the 6.2 don't have a great reputation despite many folks running them 200k+ miles and getting good fuel economy in many cases.
I noted one person in Australia had converted a troopy '45 into a vortec chevy and had good fuel economy -20'ish, I was surprised that he hadn't gone with a Oz spec diesel..
Before you jump in, start pricing all of the adapters, lift, motor, vacuum issues if you have a power brake booster, 24 volt vs. 12 volt on non US or military spec motors, and then leave another $500 to $1000 for all the little misc. things that come up. Then make sure your gear ratios and tranny will handle the rpm range that the diesel runs best in.
There are a lot of discussions here and on 4BTswaps.com that you should check into before you think it is going to save you money to run a diesel..
Keep us posted.. welcome!!!

Had Bob Bancroft stop by the house on Wednesday in his HZT 60. Dang, that thing just purrs. Sure it was a lot of work to get to where it is now, but the end product is an amazing rig. Having never heard a Toy IDI engine before... man it makes me want one.

Grants Pass is not too far & if you ever head over to the coast ?
i have a 40 with an old H1 in it in Crescent City
they are (almost) a bolt up :)
you are welcome to see it, just give me advance notice
i'm not a purest so with the 350 already in it, i would think the Vortec would be your easiest swap
here is my H1

I followed Bob's saga with the importing, install and then the uninstall and so on, not cheap and then with a used motor there is no guarantee in many cases. Very nice rig as well.

I think you should just swap in a jet turbine power unit and a couple of tranny's behind it to get the gear ratios need!
