Hi - my 2F 1980 FJ40 has been getting restored (off-frame) for about 1 year and it's close to being completed. After reading a lot of post and discussions that provide positive feedback about swapping the 2F with a 4BT engine, I've become very interested.

Can the specialist and gurus in this form please assist me with my endeavor.

I am looking for reputable company that has successfully performed a 4BT swap into an FJ40. Preferably the company would be in the Washington D.C. area, but I'm willing to ship vehicle anywhere just to get it done RIGHT !

Thank you !

I don't think that there is anyone in the DC area who is a diesel specialist and would be ideal for this swap. I'd suggest your drive a 4bt truck before you do the swap. You may love/like/dislike/hate it.

If you do decide to do a 4bt, Profits seems to be to the go do source for this.

Try posting this in the CLCC section. I have a friend of a friend that specializes in diesel conversions out in Manassas...not sure if they've done a 4bt into a fj40, but they should have some good ideas. I'll try and get you that info by Wednesday.

Stop by and introduce yourself to the club. I bet the other guys know something better than I do.

As the owner of a 1980 soon to be HZJ40 I love the diesel swap idea. Gotta say haven't heard across the board raves over on the diesel boards for either the 4BT or the 6BT in a 40. Seems to be very application specific love/hate thing going on. If you run one of these in some other rig you own or drive regular, then you know what you're getting into. If you haven't you really want to maybe talk to Profit's and see if they can give you the name of someone in the DC area who is running a 4BT in a 40 so that you can go over and see it test drive it etc.

If you decide after a test run that it is too loud etc. Stop by the diesel forum. Most folks there will probably steer you toward 1HZ or 1HD-T or 13B-T depending on your application.

As I'll be driving my rig back home to DC one of these days I'll be following this thread to see if you come across a good diesel mechanic in the area. My bet is you are gonna find a guy somewhere between Warrenton and Fredericksberg, lots of cruisers in Warrenton and you got IPOR in Fredericksberg.
Good luck
John

I appreciate all the feedback, suggestion, and advice. As always, always appreciative of all the expertise here. I would love to be as mechanically savvy as most of the folks here, so doing it myself is a scary thought. :).

Thanks for the invite to the wdc cruiser club, consider me there once the car is done.

My FJ is being restore in South America, where I was posted. I am back in the states but my car still being restored. I can't wait. I was able to get a top of the line restoration without the huge cost.

Again, thanks for the advice.

i have done 2 conversions and my advice to you is to try to find a Toyota diesel engine that was made for the truck. being a 40 you could do a 3B or a 13BT. pretty much the same engine but the 13Bt is direct injected and turboed. that would be my choice. i know parts would be easier to find with the cummins motor but a toyota diesel is unstoppable. search the diesel section as mentioned above there is alot of info there and good luck.
