My neighbor's drunk girlfriend plowed into the back of my parked 1980 FJ40 last night. Need some recommendations for knowledgeable / good body shops in Austin.

Thanks.

My condolences....where did you bury the body?

That sucks about your '40.

I've used Berli's up in Pflugerville with good results. not cheap by any means, but they do phenomenal work.

You don't happen to own the sky blue 40 that's usually parked on the street in Allandale, do you? If so, I met you at Billy's last year. Sorry to hear of your mishap. Hope the drunk girlfriend is well insured.

Talk to Jeff at Jeff's Auto Body on Lamar. It's a well established Mom and Pop business, not a franchise. They are not fast or cheap, but Jeff is a perfectionist and the work they turn out is outstanding. They've repaired my 62 and 40 with excellent results.

Good luck with the repairs.

Yep, that's the one. I remember you Lee, you have the sweet red FJ40.

You should have seen her blazer....just about totaled it. THe LC on the other hand just had minor cosmetic damage (rear bumperette flattened, drivers side rear quarter panel and ambulance door dented in a bit. Overall, it came out the winner.

Of course, she doesn't have insurance. Big surprise.

I will check out both recommendations you guys gave me. Thanks for the tips!

Regards,

Chad

Chad,

No insurance? At least your truck returned the favor and inflicted some pain. I hope she volunteered to foot your repair bill. If not, in the interest of minimizing repair costs, I suggest buying a new bumperette from Cruiser Dan or John Hocker and farming out the paint & body work. In addition to the other shops, you may want to consider Ed's Auto Body on Duke Road. ( ed's auto body austin - Google Maps )

It's sort of a junky looking place, but they turn out high quality restoration work and don't work off insurance rate manuals. Ed's quotes are usually 1/2 that of Austin body shops that specialize in insurance claims. I have no personal experience with Ed, but several other local Cruiser owners do, and they were all pleased with his work.

Good luck,
Lee

Thanks, I will check them out as well. As far as insurance goes, I have a bunch. So I am really only out the deductible.

She, on the other had, is still in jail. Apparently this is her 3rd or 4th DUI.

ATX Body Shop

I know the Blue FJ40. I live in Central and see you cruisin around once in a while.

This is an e-mail I received from Lee & the Lone Star Land Cruiser group when I was starting my search to clean up some rust and repaint my FJ60.

Good Luck,
BB

Jeff's Auto Body (www.jeffsautobodyrepair.com) at 6614 North Lamar, phone 452-3373. It's a family owned shop that's been around for years, and they do nothing but first class work. Jeff Sessler is the owner, and he's usually there, along with his son Joe and wife Fran. They aren't cheap, but their work is high quality.

H & R Auto Body in Leander, 2201 Highway 183, phone 259-3030. They're several miles north of Lakeline Mall on 183, so aren't particularly convenient but they have a lower overhead, hence lower prices than you'll find in metro Austin. The owner is Darrell Dawson, and he's usually there on site.

Jeff and Darrell are both scrupulously honest, in addition to producing quality work.

There's another place you may want to check out, Anderson Lane Body Shop, which I haven't used but has a good reputation. they're at 1113 West Anderson Lane, phone 459-1544. The owner is Travis Hastings.

Or if you don't mind a little road trip, Hernandez body shop in New Braunfels works on 40's. pm me for info..

Hernandez Body Shop

Is Hernandez the shop that Daniel at Wimberly 4x4 is now using for his paint and body work? If so, I saw several examples of their work on 40's and was favorably impressed.

If you have their address and contact info, please post them. I've got some minor rust issues and most shops in Austin won't touch rust repairs.

Thanks,
Lee

I'm bringing my 72 FJ40 over to Rockport (near Corpus) TX in less than a month- I also need some body work - rust managment. Would appreciate any information on shops down by the coast...

Any updates - I used Ed's shop on my Fj40, and several of the Austin crew has as well. There are some pictures of his shop and the work he did in my build tread.
Good luck! -Mark
