Hi Guys, I'm a new member...

I am doing some work on an FJ40 March 1979. Among others the prev owner replaced the rear engine mounts with some tyre rubber pieces and plates  . Anywayz i got the original supports but have no idea HOW to mount them. Toyota faxed me a tech sheet - can't see squat. I got a pic of a chassis/engine off EBay but I'm even more confused, it loooks different to the Toyota pic.

Could anyone pls post a pic or a link to a pic showing how the four rear engine supports go in ?? This is a 4 speed early transfer case model, so no cross-member. Many thanks !

Also, a very important question... I am changing some gaskets & seals on the transfer case. However it also leaks from between the tr case and the g'box spacer. I do not want to remove the whole thing as it is a royal pain to do so for one seal. I would only like to replace (or remove) the gasket and squeeze some UltraBlue (or similar) on there. I have the new gaskets available.

My question is: Can I undo the bolts of the transfer case to gearbox (inbl the ones inside the PTO), support the tr case a little with a floor jack and just back it off 20-30cm so I can get in there and either squeeze the compound on the existing gasket or replace the existing gasket with new and smear the compound on as well ? I would have to cut the new gasket to get it over the main shaft , but putting compound on should take care of that (cut at top somewhere so it does not leak). My fear is that I may damage the double-lip seal between the gbox spacer and tr case - although the tr case should only rotate down and be supported by the PTO and idler gears and the bearing (????)

Has anyone attempted something like this and/or is it doable ? I can' take only the tr case off because the mainshaft is too long and the tr case hits the fuel tank. Someone suggested slackening the gbox bolts so the whole thing tilts down and I can slide the tr case off altogether but I fear that would destroy the clutch etc ... Will it ? (sounds really dangerous)

If anybouy has an idea as to how to remove the tr case only, that would also be good, I could also change the double-lip seal...

Many thanks again :-) Sorry for the long post, hope it makes sense ?

Welcome to MUD!

the older engine mounts were round. The newer ones are rectangular in shape and have rubber in between them.

Can you post a picture of what you have?

Hi, thanks :)

I have the round ones with metal ends (they are painted but yes the ends are metal)...

Ahaaa! I have found something on SOR. it seems on the RHS there are two supports on top of each other, both convex side up... Very weird. I wonder why they did not make a thicker one. It seems just about all parts are individual and not reused elsewhere (except for the bolts.

Thanks for the answers. I wonder if anyone can enlighten me on the T/case removal... (part 2)

You should man up and do it right, or just let it leak. It's a day job to take it all the way out. While the tranny is out, you can fix your motor mounts.

Squeezing goo onto the gasket isn't going to stop the leak. It will probably leak from the transfer case into the tranny. Case will get empty, trans will overflow. It will probably still leak onto the ground in the mean time. This is a well-known issue.

Here's the SOR diagram for which you're looking. I'm pretty sure those two mounts go on either side of the bracket, regardless of what the diagram looks like.

Transfer case Update: I have managed to undo all the bolts and to rotate the tr case (used a floor jack but it;s not too heavy as it is held by the gbox mainshaft).

Current problem: The double lip seal is shot, pieces fell out of it when I pulled the tr case away. I will probably need to take the gbox / tr case off anyway. Damn ! I tried so hard no to do it.
