She means well, I think most of us guys into car building or whatever will listen to the wife on not to buy big cost items especially around the holiday season it's that sometimes we forget and the passion of the your addiction takes over, I don't think the Oh I forgot will work after the secound time Ha!
3_puppies you said your in TF Idaho can you PM me your price for the trans, that would be a pick up. Thanks

Did I miss someone posting that the 60 series H42 is the same as the 40 series except for the top cover the years the 40 series was being made. The extension started 4/85. I assume this was so there is only one length transmission, four or five speed. A few specialty 4X series made after 84. If those got the extension I have no idea but since most seem to be longer wheel base I guess it's possible. If you have the 40 series top cover the chances of finding one from a 8/80-4/85 FJ60 is a lot better then one from a 40 series which were imported in fewer and fewer numbers in the early eighties.

Yeah, easier to find the "short" 60-series 4-speed than the 40-series variation. I do know 1st-hand the top covers can be swapped. I have a "short" 60-series transmission I tested it on. Equally as difficult to find is the rear 3-piece support/crossmember for the same reason you stated for the top cover.

At some point, I'd like to experiment with the "long" 4-speed bits and merge them with a "short" 4-speed to get the larger input shaft and matching bearing retainer.

I'm kind if tracking what you are saying but what is the bottom line, will a 60 trans of the same year work in a 40?

Yes; However, not without swapping the corresponding 40-series parts. Take a look at this picture of a 40-series 4-speed from SOR's website. The placement of the shifter for the transmission is forward an inch or so from the location of one from a 60-series. 4-speeds with the split transfer case initially came without the space between the transmission and transfer case.

The bearing retainers and input shafts have a different diameter between the "long" and "short" versions. These images are from another post here on mud about he input shaft differences. The "long" version is not a quick/easy swap.
