Hello everyone:

Could some one tell me the front and rear seal measures for a FJ40 1962 3 sp transfercase, seal numbers or where can I get them.

Could some one explain me the difference form a 1962 and a 1963 transfercase, in most of the parts catalogs, the seals sold are from 1963 onwards.

Many thanks,

The tranny and transfer for the early FJ40 were different. The change to the later style happened sometime during 1963. If you have the old seals you can probably match them at a place that specializes in bearings. You can also get them From Specter Off Road. They a little hard to find on their site. The early tranny is page 060 and the transfer is page 067 in their catalog. The seals are about all that's available.

John

PS the Specter site is sor.com

I just read your other posts. Check to make sure what you have in the way of a tranny and transfer matches the pictures on Specter's site. An AMC engine and five lug wheels is not going to match anything that was ever brought into the US. If your tranny/transfer don't match what Specter shows post some picture on Mud someone maybe able to ID it for you. Don't order any parts until you know for sure what you have.

You are always welcome to post pictures of your vehicle in the 25 forum. We always like pictures of early non-US cruisers:cheers:

Thanks, I will post as many pictures as I can, The rig was bougth on Dec 31, 1962 from a toyota dealer in the State of Veracruz, Mexico, and has lived his entire life in the state of Chiapas just a few miles away from the border with Guatemala. Regretably the engine was swap back in 1991 to the present engine, I tried to locate the mechanic who did the swap with no luck. I´m the fifth owner. the transfer case linkage has been changed to a floor type, It looks bolt on kit, no homemade fabrication. The front driveshaft is missing, the direction colum has been changed and has a very lousy "sigsaw" PS that bearly works. It has a centered rear diferential. Obiously the tag at the glove box with the shifting instructions is in spanish and the speedometer in KM/hr. The original color as stated in the original invoice is red with beige interior, I beliebe it was a hard top although the tube has the holes to fit the convertible frame.

Thanks again

Eduardo

I copied the pictures from SOR site. The first one is the early three speed transmission the second is the early transfer case and the third is the floor shift linkage from the later three speed transfer. Your transmission and transfer should look like these. The side shifter shaft and part number I on the transfer case would be the easiest way to ID. Since yours came as a column shift it would have to have the shifter holes on the side to be original. The cover on the back of the transfer case (part #I) that covers the end of the transmission output shaft would only have four bolt holes while the later ones had six. The early transfer all have the vacuum shifter but the later direct floor shifter will work on the earlier transfer. This probably what they used if it is aToyota shifter. So does this match yours?

No pictures yet. I thinking if your transfer case has a floor shifter that's it the post 63 style. The transmission housing of the later three speed has a threaded post off it's passerger's side. This is the main pivot point for the floor shifter. I checked the early three speed transmission I have and none have it. Chances are if it is Toyota it's the later style. Which would make life a lot easier for you. Parts are going to easier to find. The transfer was in use for at least ten years with higher production number. The three speed ended in the USA in early 74 but was used in other markets for many years after that.

John, Thanks for all the info, I believe you are right, this might be a post 63 trnsfercase, I look forward to get advice on how to upload pictures in order to get your expert advice. If any info from my FJ40 is usefull, please don´t hesitate to request it

Since its a post 1963 transfercase, unless an expert tells me it´s not, could some one tell me the front and rear seal size or numbers, so I can get them here in Mexico. If I buy them from SOR, the shipping goes up to $50 USD for a $13 USD buy, acoording to the diagram os the pre 1963 TC posted by John, the seals are the pieces No D and AJ, obiously I need the seals from a post 1963

Thanks again to John fot the info.

Eduardo

Now that you know it's a post 63 you might have better luck in the 40/55 forum. Lots of people are running that transfer because of the lower gearing and how it can mate to the 74-80 four speed.
