Car and Driver has a pretty detailed article on the FJ this month (p 48). The issue also discusses the TLC Icon (p34).

FJ
0-to-60 7.2
1/4 mile 15.9

Mfr est. MPG (Depending on 2wd/4wd)
16-18 City
19-22 Hwy

91 octane is recommended but not required
239 HP
278 lb-ft torque

Bridgestone Duelers

28 cubic feet rear cargo or 67 with seats down

Curb weight 4100-4300

Now C&D says..
2wd
Part time 4wd with auto trans
Full time 4wd with manual

Dunno if they've mis-spoken when they said "full-time"

Activating the manual rear locker disengages the A-TRAC system (duh)

C&D test drove it on Toyota's off-road course in Ojai, CA.

Full Time 4wd w/manual is correct.

Did anybody else find the 6-speed / AWD combo odd? It seams to me if somebody wanted an Auto they would want the AWD (both require the least amount of driver input). I was thinking about the FJ for my wife, but she has fallen in love with the 5-speed auto / AWD combo of her 04 4runner...

Her last rig was a 5-speed manual with a standard 2wd/4wd/4wl transfer and she didn't like having to think about wether to put it in 4wd or not during winter driving and with a lot of in town driving was glad to be rid of the manual trany.

Tell you the truth after driving the auto for a while I was leaning that direction as well (it has a great learning controller that adjust to your style of driving, plus you can manually upshift and downshift it quite smoothly).

Anyways I'm just ranting at this point, but it does seem odd and I would love to hear if anybod has any guesses as to why they went this way. Oh yeah and with the auto and the center diff lock engaged you disabled the VCS but maintain the A-trac functionality; is there a way to do this with the manual?

But I wondered if it's truely full time in the way the 80 series operates or just AWD.

I believe it is similar to the 80, IIRC there is a detailed description on Toyota's Build your own FJ Cruiser website.

It appears that the CDL is incorporated into the manual t-case shifter in the 6 speed manual tranny. Do you think that means the vehicle must be placed in neutral before the CDL can be engaged in 4 Hi? Any thoughts or explainations?

The Toyota info says it is static 40% front/60% rear, if front slips it can send 70% to the rear, if the rear slips it can send 53% to the front. The T case lever has 4Hi - 4Hi Locked - Neutral - 4Lo Locked.
