Hi everyone, by brother is building an fj-40 and is going to 4-link the rear end. He is haveing problems on what coils to use and how long they should be. He is wanting to run 38 inch tires and not have to cut the fenders. Is this reasonable?? Also does anyone run 4-link rears and drive them on the street very often? thanks in advance.

I can't really help much but I thought you might check with proffitt's cruisers as they offer a link and coil kit for the rear. Maybe you don't want to buy it but you could get some info on how theirs is set up the tell you allot about the street characteristics on it as well. As for 38's with no cutting I think it would have to be so tall over the tires it would flip over in a strong wind driving down the road. Just my thoughts maybe proffits could help

Exactly! Running 38's w/ any kind of suspension will put your ride height way too high. When I designed my 4-link, I wanted maximum travel at the lowest possible ride height, so out went the rear wheelwell sides, cut all the way to the top:

Sounds like he might have to look up the thread "How to flop and go" if he does that

Yup, you need to trim sheet metal. Mine is about as low as you can go on 42's and still have a rear tub with the side metal for the wheel wells fully cut out, and it is still a full 3" taller than I would wish for.

Yeah I honestly didn't think it was possible to do it and still have it flex at all. Would 35's be possible, and still have an alright amount of flex??(This is my brothers rig, if it was mine, i'd just cut the fenders) Thanks for the input guys.

Why wouldn't your brother want to cut the fenders? If you're building a truck with 38" tires and a 4 link it better be wheeled hard and the body is going to get damaged anyways.

Trust me I've brought up this point... His truck is in pretty nice shape is the problem, so i think he's decided to find a truck that is a little more beat up to start with.

so what coils would be best for this?have heard TJs

I'm running 38" SX's using 2 1/2" TJ rears & cut down a little 4" TJ fronts. I'd run the 4" rears if you plan on carrying rear passengers, tools, etc. Mine barely rubs on full compression & I only carry the necessities on board, so not much load in the rear.
