Hi everyone, by brother is building an fj-40 and is going to 4-link the rear end. He is haveing problems on what coils to use and how long they should be. He is wanting to run 38 inch tires and not have to cut the fenders. Is this reasonable?? Also does anyone run 4-link rears and drive them on the street very often? thanks in advance.

I'm running a 4 link rear using 2 1/2" TJ coils in the rear, 4" in the front (cut down a little). I like my ride height lower & don't mind slight rubbing at full compression. But for optimum wheel travel & no rubbing, I'd suggest 4" coils. I scavenged my brackets from a donor TJ, which saved me allota time & ca$h:

To run 38's you will have to trim some fender or there will be lots of rubbing. Coils, check the older broncos coils out and the TJ coils. I only know of a few people runneing 38's on FJ40 and they did SOA and 2 inch lift springs. The SOA gives you about 5 - 6 inchs of lift so with the additional 2 inches your looking at about 7 - 8 inches of lift plus fender trim unless it is going to be a street demon and never go offroad then you might be able to keep the fenders. What year is the cruiser. Recommend going full float in the rear and a birfield eliminator up front along with disc conversion. Should be fairly streetable with a 4 link, just dont skimp on the tubing size. If you go with TJ coils you can also use the spacers from Tera-Flex http://www.teraflex.biz/ to gain a few more inches of lift. Good luck

Thanks a lot for the info guys. The truck is a '76 fj40. If the fenders did need to be trimmed, how much would be needed?? We would like to keep the truck's rear fenders stock looking...as in not cutting huge amounts out of them, but some trimming does not bother us. Thanks again everyone.

Why not look inro Land Rover/ Range Rover springs while you are at it. Some people around here have been modifying them and their suspension systems to work with various other vehicles with good results. The LR springs are available in a wide variety of spring rates and different lengths, both stock and aftermarket. You should be able to find a combination that will help you clear 38's.

you can often find used stock LR coils for next to nothing:

Just a thought! I'd like to see a FJ40 sporting a modified D90 suspension some day...

If you don't want to trim and you want to run monster tires, then you're gonna have to run 90% of the tire below the frame even at full compression. It's gonna be silly tall and top heavy.

Really long springs, especially Wrangler springs are gonna make it pretty undriveable. Too soft and tippy.

JMHO. No real experience with a lot of coil spring builds.

I'm running 80 springs on the back of my 55 on 37s with massive trimming and only a few inches of up travel.

I run Aerostar coils on the rear with a 3 link. It flexes great and rides like a Lexus on the street.

I run 38.5's on my rear axle, with just 4" lift springs. Just some fender trimming.

This pick shows my fenders pretty well, they still maintain the stock lines and folded lip.

Thanks for the info guys, and also thanks for the links, When was talking about trimming the fenders i mean that we are just trying to limit the amount of cutting so that it still holds kind of the original lines of the crusier..much like CrusinGA's cruiser (thanks for the pics everyone to.) And so when i say that it looks like a 4-link could be very liveable on the street this is correct i'd assume from your comments then...if anyone thinks otherwise please share. Thanks again guys.

Suck it up man & cut those fenders! I thought I needed a sway bar front & rear, but after test driving they're really not needed - not much body roll at all:

i am running a 1/4 eliptical with a 3 link and feel like i get alot of body roll.I like your sway bar LC Hamma, whos /what is it?
with a cut and turn driving on the street with 37s no problems besides a little body roll

They're stock rear FJ55 sway bars. Due to having drive flanges on the front, my top speed is about 35-40 mph, so only driving back roads I've noticed minimal roll on TJ coils.
