Greetings. 1995 FZJ80 with OBDII port. After reading through several threads on OBD options, I've decided to try the ScanTool OBD Link MX WiFi device transmitting to the DashCommand app on a Pioneer AppRadio 3 (advice against this option/plan would be appreciated, although several members I respect on Mud have had positive things to say about this particular ScanTool unit). I will be using the device via an iPhone 6 with the latest iOS software.

Questions - (1) I'm wondering how well the ScanTool device fits/secures on the OBDII port and whether it is sufficiently flush for the driver's knee fuse panel plastic cover/kick plate to cover it. Has anyone successfully installed this device and been able to cover it with the kick plate? (2) If the cover/kick plate does not hide the device, what have people done to give the installation an OEM look/feel?

I'm not entirely sold on this option - still thinking about the hardwired ScanGauge II - and would welcome any thoughts, suggestions, experiences or comparisons. No doubt having the ability to view engine diagnostics on the AppRadio screen is far preferable than the ScanGauge II, but I'm still concerned about both fitment and reliability of the ScanTool OBD Link MX WiFi unit.

Many thanks.

I have the App radio 2... and it's garbage. I wouldn't trust it as a door stop.

I hope for your sake it doesn't require Apple's HDMI/lightning adapter - that's the weakest link. I've gone through 4 of them in the last year. Once the warranty ran out in August I've been contemplating a replacement head unit. Something that doesn't rely on that adapter:

So if it were me I'd go with ANYTHING ELSE.

Thanks for that reply. I know the AppRadios have taken hits on functionality and I've experienced my share of issues, but overall I've been very happy with the AppRadio 3. Requires a little patience sometimes, but it works nicely. Sorry about your troubles.

Do you have any experience with an OBD setup?

Thanks again.

I have the OBDLink MX in my 80 in the bluetooth version. It fits well, stays put and does it's job nicely. It shuts itself off and doesn't drain the battery on the truck.

I can't comment on the pioneer stuff, I went with a chinese Joying android head unit and it displays the information great using the app called Torque. Keep in mind that the WIFI version limits what you can use your WIFI for while you use it. I personally preferred the bluetooth for that very reason, I can still connect to a WIFI hotspot or whatever I want while using the bluetooth adapter.

I don't have experience with that OBD reader or your receiver. In general Bluetooth is the better choice for non-Apple connections. WiFi is the better Apple option. Apple decided not to enable full sharing on Bluetooth, so it does some things, but not others.

I do have a low profile OBD reader on my 95. The fuse cover does not fit over it. If I want the OBD reader connected, I leave the cover off. Having the cover off my fuse panel doesn't bother me.
