Hi all, I just purchased my first land cruiser and have been slowly catching up on some maintenance and wear items. It’s a 92 FJ80 with a 3FE, 166,000 miles, lately I have been having some issues with starting the engine for the first time each day. I’ve looked on the forums a bit but couldn’t find my exact problem so forgive me if I missed it.

The first start on the motor each day seems like the battery almost doesn’t have enough juice to turn over the motor. After driving it for a minute to the post office, it fires right up for the rest of the day with plenty of starting power. I’ve replaced the battery and checked that I’m getting the proper charging voltage. I’m wondering if it would be something draining the battery overnight as the prior owner installed a couple lights and a winch to the battery. I’m new to these engines and at a loss as what to look at next. I was thinking maybe replacing the starter? The terminal connectors at the battery look fine to me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Assuming you have an OEM Denso starter, I would start with starter contacts/plunger, a good cleaning of the solenoid bore and some lightweight grease.
Tons of threads regarding starter contact replacement if you do a quick search.
Different part numbers for the FJ80 starters vs the FZJ80 starters, but same concept.
All parts available from Toyota.

28226-72080 battery side terminal
28226-72010 motor side terminal
28235-35080 plunger

I would also add a voltmeter to the battery (Amazon). That way you know if something is draining the battery.
