hey all. Newbie here. Been visiting and looking for an fj for some finally pulled the trigger on one last week. Some pics attached. 78. Mostly original. Decent shape. A little surface rust. Doesn't appear to have cancer.
Question. It dies when starting from a stop but just on a hill. In forward or reverse. if I get some speed it doesn't hesitate. Acceleration pump? Other possibilities?
Thanks in advance and thanks for all the other valuable info

Eddie, I have never heard of an accelerator pump, so probably people not sure what to do with your thread. Maybe you meant fuel Pump

First you need some specs on your truck. I will assume it is a 2F with a carb. Is it a stock carb or a Weber (other). A pic of your engine bay would help if you are not sure

So are you saying if you start on a flat surface it will start fine, idle fine and run fine

Does it matter what direction (Up/dn) you are going on the hill?

What angle of hill seems to cause the problem.

Did you buy it at a different elevation than you are currently at?

Does it die suddenly or does it quit with gasps of running out of fuel

Welcome Eddie! Great looking 40!!

As for your issue, have you made sure you have a clean fuel filter and that your mechanical fuel pump is putting out at least 3psi? Disconnect t feed fuel line from carb and point it into a container. Then have someone turn ignition for 15secs - it should pump about 1/2 cup.

Is your idle at around 650 rpm and your timing around 7*BTDC?

...and just to address the elephant in the room... Are you sure you aren't simply killing the engine, when starting on grade?

Another potential problem, if your fuel pump isn't putting out at least 3psi, the hard fuel lines run against the inside of the passenger frame and that is the lowest point in the fuel system... I would disconnect each end of the hard fuel feed line and clean it out - e.g. Blow air thru it. Any dirt in that area make mud in the lines.

The accelerator pump is a part of the carb. It gives an extra shot of gas when the accelerator pedal is depressed. It is at one end of a long horizontal lever at the top of the carb, iirc.

That might be your problem. Maybe retarded timing too. Maybe a vacuum leak.

Here it is: top of the pic on the far side of the top of the carb. Long gold colored lever. The black bellows partailly hidden at the top is the top of the pump.

.

I learned something new. Knew the carb did that just didn't know it had a name. Thanks Mr Toad!

look in the carb hit the gas and see if you have a squirt of fuel shoot into the carb if not the hole may be plugged ,i have seen the acc pump linkage missing on several fj40s i have owned .usually thats not the problem with starting out i have driven many 40s with that little hole plugged and it only seems to affect starting the engine

thanks gents.
answers to questions-
2f with stock carb
flat surface all is good. idle is good.
Doesn't seem to matter what direction. Does it in forward or reverse. Consistently.
I'm talking about maybe a 15 or 20% grade. My driveway.
Bought at the same elevation. Unfortunately, not much grade change in central Alabama or Mississippi where I bought it.
It gasps at times but just generally boggs down an dies.
addressing the elephant in the room-no i'm not just killing it

Thanks for the recommendations. Gonna dig into it hopefully this weekend. will look at the fuel system from top to bottom. If I can get away from wife, kiddos, et.
