I had a fire extinguisher in the Rover, and luckily I only had to use it once in the 7 years I had it (wasn't my truck, some drunk asshat on the trail lit his yota rock crawler on fire.)

I've been meaning to get one for the LC, but keep forgetting. After seeing a post on pirate about a truck going up in flames I want to get one soon. I don't want to however just go out and buy some cheapo piece of junk, so I'd like to get some input on what you guys recommend?

considering...

I use this one in my rigs. I also have some of the disposable kind hidden around in various vehicles.

I've put out a lot of vehicle fires over the years. There's no such thing as "Enough" fire extinguisher when you have a vehicle on fire.

For backup, I have several quart size water bottles in my truck that I use for drinking water. A quick stab with a pocket knife through the cap makes an excellent water based extinguisher. The range is perfect for popping a hood and squirting through the gap. They also work excellent for a rig that is overheating, you can spray it right through the grill onto the top portion of the radiator and cool a rig off in nothing flat.

Mounting in a race vehicle is a little harder, but for a mild trail rig that doesn't hammer down too often, the screw in metal brackets seem to hold up o.k.

You can shop around and find some pretty good deals on extinguishers, but remember, a $100 worth of fire extinguishers is cheap when you have a $10K rig on fire..

Thanks Will.

How big is that extinguisher? I had one in the Rover that was about 14" tall (give or take) and it mounted nicely in the rear corner. I would like to get something around that size cause I agree with you, there's never "enough." I've seen the little onces they sell for cars, and those look too small for a large SUV fire. I sell a nice marine extinguisher at work, but its about 12" by 3" diameter (to give you an idea of size.)

I'll more than likely buy a new mount with it cause i dont think the factory ones are enough for a off road vehicle.

I think it's a 10lb unit? Its about 4" in diameter and 15-16" tall? Just guessing. It's about 2-3 times the size of the average Marine extinguisher they sell for 18-25 bucks depending on the store.

I bought them at Costco, but I've seen them cheaper elsewhere. It's the standard "Home" re-useable size. If you've ever seen the ones that are in most patrol cars, it's the same one.

One of them will put out most engine fires, two will put out a car that's 25% on fire. Five of them will not completely extinguish a mattress wedged under a Neon..., but a gallon of water sprayed through the top of a milk jug will keep it down until the FD gets there with a Fire Truck..

Nothing like the voice of experience:grinpimp:

Matt,

I'd be curious to see what kind of a mounting solution you come up with. I have a 5# bottle, but have yet to come up with a super quick access and yet super sturdy (think projectile in a collision) solution for it.

Thanks.

I've been pondering that lately also. Its easy to put an extinguisher in the back of the truck when its empty, but a whole different story when its full of gear. Finding a good spot will be tricky for sure.... I'm going to buy an extinguisher this week and take a look at things next week when im off.

I'll pop off the trim panels and take a look at whats behind them for a secure mounting point. I mounted my power tank and extinguisher that way in the Rover, and they worked great.

I'll post up where and what i come up with.

One idea I had was to mount it on the D panel by removing the very rear seat belts and using that area to bolt a FE holder. A simple L bracket with two quick fist things would probably work. But, I worry about a high speed frontal impact and the quick fist simply detaching themselves from this bracket.

Not to mention, when you need it, it would really suck when you have to open the tire carrier, hatch and then retrieve the extinguisher, which might be too late. I still haven't found a decent place to mount mine.

Thats the scary part, a hard frontal impact and that thing is at head level to begin with. Maybe a small one, but I wouldnt feel safe with a 10lb extinguisher there for sure.

I thought about how fast it would take to get out and open the rear latch, but didn't even consider having to open up two swing aways first. Good point cause I was thinking of putting it back there.

Behind the front seat next to the door may just be a good spot. You can always pack your gear so it's in the open and easy to get to. :hmm:

I keep mine upright in the corner of the action packer container behind my back seat, toward the front so I can pop open the driver's side back door, flip the lid and grab it. I was about to mount it, but I realized the mount was crap and I didn't feel like getting a fire extinguisher upside the head. Unless the container pops open...:hmm:

So I bought an extinguisher today, but it's a 5lb dry chemical ABC. We have the 10lb units at my store and they are HUGE:eek:

If the 5 pounder is too small, i guess i can just stick it in my house or garage, but that 10lb extinguisher seems mighty large to mount in a truck. The 5lb extinguisher is the same one i had in the Rover.

Yup, that's the same size I got. So, I actually have 5 lb models, not 10 lb unit. I corrected my first post.

Looks like what I've got as well.

Dollar for dollar, that's about as much as you ever really need. Just use it sparingly and sweep from one side to the other. Too fast and the flame comes back, too slow and it runs around the blast.

That bracket is sweet.

A roll cage makes life so easy for mounting aftermarket crap.

:idea:Why don't you build an internal roll cage?

You guys ever been to this place?

I'm looking for a car mount similar to this...
Public Safety*Heavy-Duty Vehicle Brackets for Fire Extinguishers*HDVBFE*-*Free Shipping Online

I think i have a pretty good spot to mount it below the "C" pillar where there's some secure points.

Show me the area you have in mind. That bracket is very nice but seems overkill for this application!! I was thinking of using the bracket that comes with the FE unit but install another quick release securing band then bolt it some place.

I like to over-engineer stuff! :grinpimp:

I dont like the way the bracket on this one just sits around the top of the unit. My last extinguisher had a piece that supported it from the top also, where as this one doesnt. I'm going to check out a local shop that said they had a nice automotive mount, but if I dont like it then i'll just make this one work.

I'll post a pic later today with the body panel off to show you where I'm talking about.
