Another local checking in. The wife and I just moved to Reno last May and I love it so far! I sold my '07 Street Glide ( never rode it) to buy a FJ40 and fund the restoration. Here's the thread I started on the other forum: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/611256-1973-fj40-restoration.html

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting you all at the upcoming events/meetings. A friend of mine here just bought a '74 FJ40 this month too so I'll probably drag him along as well.

On a related note, I am on the hunt for a set of either late LC or mini truck outer fine spline birfields to complete my mini truck brake conversion. If you happen to have a line on a set, please let me know.

Go Longfield's and forget it. Or look for a spare or two to go with the OEM birf's.

IMHO popping for the Longfield birfs is worth the peace of mind

Don't forget to buy the Longfield hub gears.

Lee,
Glad you posted up.
I donno what your finances are like, but longfields really are a nice way to go.
I don't carry a trail spare since I put those in.

Thanks for the info on the Longfields, guys. However, while I do look forward to a good bit of trail driving in the truck, I won't be inching over any boulders anytime soon. I think (and could be wrong) that Longfield axles are just overkill for my application. I've heard that the mini truck axles are heavier and are a nice upgrade. I just figured I'd step up to a pair to dump my Warn hubs for a set of Asin hubs and beef up the axle a bit at the same time.

Might look at trail gear...

Also, reno4x4 guys might have some laying around too. Post up there, too.
Cruiserparts, net will have some too in cruiser birfs.
Check on mud under the parts section.
That being said... There's no such thing as "overkill" for axle upgrades. :)

While i understand what your sayin the warn hubs to me are stronger than the stock asian hubs unless you wanna go closer to stock original then thats fine. the asian hubs are good and will take a pretty good aount of abuse. that bein said are you or do you think you might get into more crawlin in the future if so go with the longfeilds n warns. not only that warns are prolly easier to come by then the asains i could be wrong just my 2 cents

If you buy longs, be sure to clearance the swivel ball housing so the bell of the birf clears. Longs are a bit bigger than stock and mine hit inside. I found that out AFTER I shoved all the grease in there... That sucked!

Dan, I've always heard the Aisin hubs were much stronger than the Warns? I had warns, and side by side the Aisins looked beefier... I tossed the Warns in the garbage.

Actually the dealers added the warn hubs stateside 40's shipped with drive flanges.

Yep. Aisin mo' betta' than Warn when it comes to toyota hubs. Aisin's are made of much better metal whereas the Warn's are soft cast potmetal crap.

This was always my understanding too.

If you get the Longfield hub gears they are bullet proof.

FYI you can use Asin hubs from almost any Japanese truck, Yota, Sammy, Nissian etc. just swap the hub gears to match you outer axles and it's all good.
The IFS Yota truck hubs are about $17 each from junk yards.

AHH kk i wasnt sure but that was why i said i could be wrong hehe learn somethin everyday

I've got the Asin locking hubs... just need the outer birfs. Longfields are not in the budget right now. If any of you spot a pair or hear of a truck being parted out, please let me know!

Check with an autoparts store. Napa or carquest. They carry rebuilt "cv's" for toyota mini trucks. Back when I first SAS'd, my 4runner, I had a friend who worked at a carquest and was able to buy several sets that way. I even sent some to bobby long back when he was modifying stock birfs. Just have them look up 78-81 FJ40 or if nothing else, mini and 60 series. If you have to use mini/60 stuff, you might have to change an inner axle for one from your 40 to get it to fit, but that's no big deal. The ones I bought came with the inner axles and birfs as a unit.
