looks great!

how did you do the grille? did you tape it off and put newspapers behind it?

The grille is where this whole process began lol. I had originally spent an inordinate amount of time sanding, prepping, and painting it with regular rattlecan. Looked great sitting on the ground in the sunlight drying, then I put it back on the truck and was pretty disappointed with how badly the black was mismatched. Not even CLOSE. So, I said screw it and hit it with the plastidip I had left over from doing the emblems. Much happier with the result. Less prep too, just wipe w/ alcohol and hit it. After that, I decided to give it a try on the rest of the trim and bumper, and as you can see it turned out pretty well.

To more directly answer your question, I pulled the grille off the truck to do all of the painting. It's three or four screws and a couple of clips. No reason to leave it on IMO, you can do a much better job with it off.

I have painted my 3rd taillight like loud, it does not wash out like it generally does in the sun and looks much better. I have the wing on the back so if the light is not lit, it looks blacked out. Here are two pictures showing on/off

I agree with Loud. The year is not 1988 and you are not modding a Chevy S10 low rider.

BTW...You get that rack mounted yet?

Still haven't gotten the rack yet. But I did take the time to plastidip the side trim today, not sure how much I like it yet but I'm thinking that once the black wheels go on it will all come together nicely if not I'll just peel it all off

Post pictures of the side trim. Curious to see how it looks.

Not sure if I'm really crazy about it but I think it will look better once the new black wheels go on

When are you getting the wheels installed? If your going to rock the black side trim black out the rear bumper. That would complete the look, especially with black rims

well according to 4wheelparts the wheels should have been at the store on february 15....this whole backordered situation has made me very frustrated! I was thinking about doing the rear bumper too I'm just not sure if I'm brave enough to go through with it...itd be a PITA to peel all that off if I didnt like it for some reason

It's Plastidip! What are you worried about. Shoot me a text if you want to do it this weekend. I'd be down to help. I want to plastidip some stuff on my rig anyways.

cool. will do. I'm free all weekend so I'll text you during the day saturday if you wanna drop by and we can have a plastidip sesh ha

hell yeah. You need to come to durhamtown on Saturday.

And for tech, I still need to get my old school 40 Series emblem mounted. 3M tape sufficient?

You have a 40 series emblem?! That's sick! I want one!!

I think that Plasti-dipping the side trim would look better on any other color BUT river rock mica. There is something special about how that model blends the bumpers, trim an body color. Now that I have seen it, I would like to see a photoshop of it blacked out from the trim down. Like if you were going to hit it with bed liner.

Are you going to Durhamtown with Nick?

I could photoshop something... But, after camping next to this 4runner last year at Cruise Moab, I was convinced it would look good on our color truck. To be honest, his was the best looking rino-lined truck I have ever seen. There were a few there to compare including some of our favorites in this forum. To be honest, while they looked good in the pictures we see. I thought they looked like crap in person... Until I saw this 4runner:
NEW MEXICO BACKROADS: NMBR 4RUNNER

I have some close-up shots of the liner and texture if you want to see it. I took them so I could show a shop what I expect when I finally do it.

i wonder if this Plasti-dipping would work on my hood ? The paint is jacked up anyway. Maybe I can stencil something cool on there....

Subaru rally guys routinely P-dip hoods, fenders, etc. The stuff will go on pretty much any clean surface.

Plasti Dip Subaru - YouTube

It can be done, you just have to be careful to apply it evenly.

I wouldn't typically agree with doing this but in Steve's situation, I think it is a good Idea. His clearcoat is peeling on the hood and it doesn't make sense to have it painted given the fact that he wheels the snot out of it. Glare reduction off the hood + protection of exposed paint = win.

I'm gonna have to get myself some of this spray plasti-dip and start playing with it. I didn't really know it came in anything other than that can you dip your tools in. Here I was thinking rattlecan bedliner was the greatest paint ever, but now I might be changing my mind......AND I think I might have to save up for some exhaust work, because Loud's rig sounds badass!

Do it. Who wants plain 'ole 2-tone paint jobs anyways? I just did a 2-tone bedliner combo on my RC and am now convinced this is the way to go...so long as your stencil image looks good
