So I discovered a small oil drip today that appears to be from the filter housing or oil cooler but its hard to tell. there are no obvious drips running down from above the housing. I replaced the plastic housing with the Tacoma one two weeks ago so maybe that is related but it doesn't seem to be leaking from where the big o-ring is on the large threads of the housing.

There is some kind of hex nut looking think on the bottom of the cooler/upper housing assembly that is at least collecting oil. Could that be leaking? what is it? The lines (i think these are tranny cooler lines) in back of the filter housing assembly are wet but I think this is just spray from the engine oil leak.

So that hex nut is the relief valve plug. Anyone have that leak on them? If the relief valve actually relieves oil pressure where does the relieved oil go? I would think the relief path is internal and if the plug is leaking, it is loose or its the o-ring/gasket.

Youve got oil both on that nut and on the edge of the oil cap housing and a bit at the bottom of the oil cooler. However it doesn’t seem to be streaking down the side of the housing so the drip would appear to be small.

something is leaking from above but I can’t tell if it’s the lip of the filter housing or something else. my gut says its the o ring you mentioned replacing the housing recently, but I’m about as sure of that as I am of where my oil leak is coming from (in the “Name that leak” thread.)

O-ring in wrong groove?

Anything is possible but I’m well aware of what groove and lube the o-rings. I also use a torque wrench so I know I didn’t over or under tighten. I he led the torque on the relief valve plug and it isn’t loose. Cant see that it’s what’s leaking as that has never been removed/replaced. I’ve cleaned it off an will see if I can’t figure out where it’s coming from.

Yeah my thought about the filter housing is only because it sounds like the most recent change. The problem solving engineer in me always wants to undo the last change first...

Your problem solving engineer is usually right eh?

Me too but that is why I focused first on the compressor clutch when my AC stopped working as I had most recently touched that. It ended up being a leak in the condenser...

I’ll pull the filter again to check as that has happened before even when a deal did the oil change.

The leak was the filter housing. I don’t know why it was leaking as everything looked ok when I took it off. I just put on a new o-ring and took a 1200 mile road trip to Minnesota and back. No leak. The only think I did different was that I submerged the new o-ring in oil to lube it up rather than spreading oil on it with my fingers. IDK.

pic after Minnesota trip.
