just started happening today. I noticed substantial feedback in my stock stereo when accelerating or under load. This has always been a bit of a problem when listening to AM, but I was listening to FM and it is substatially worse than it ever has been. Turned off the stereo and it is still happening. Any suggestions where to start? The typical banging on the dash trick didnt help!

this is a 2000 with 52k miles and a cracked exhaust manifold that Toyota refuses to fix.

Sounds like speaker wire is grounding out somewhere. Is the noise coming out of all speakers or just one? Have you installed anything new recently?

nothing new installed

nothing new installed except new antenna 2 weeks ago, which i did myself. that certainly shouldnt impact the speakers. help me understand why an improper ground would still cause distortion when the stereo is off?

Hey Coastal,
I had a cracked manifold too -- and just had it welded at a local (high end) muffler shop. cost me 2.5 hours labor (200 bucks) and it's been fine for a year....

When you say feedback, do you mean alternator whine? Some antennas are not meant to be grounded. Is it possible when you installed the new one it grounded itself out? Speakers will act like an antenna and pick up stray EMF too. Your ignition could be noisy. Alternator whine is usually ground related.

Superdosser - thanks for the input, that is my next step - i am currently going round & round with Toyota about replacing my manifold.....being in texas; I am told by both dealer that they are under hte thumb of Gulf States and the dealers cannot get them to spring for any out of warranty 'customer goodwill' fixes.....I tried the meissions warranty and no luck - they say it is actually only covered under 3/36k...i am at 5 years 2 months and 54k miles right now.

turns out i think the feedback is coming from the under the dash speaker for the VSC, key in ignition etc.... it stopped the feedback/ interference on Saturday- we will see if it starts again!
