February's Event: Meet and Greet

You guys are making this challenging for a new President.

Since the club has no insurance for this type of activity, and this is really not the true intent of the Meet and Greet, which is really our BIG family event, I am going to insist on a specific timeframe for this to occur. Should be early Saturday morning, before the bulk of those showing up for the event, and possibly Sunday afternoon, after those have left. Anytime between, guns are in cases, locked in their rigs.

I think it's a great opportunity to become familiar with shooting and gun safety, but it's a potential liability if anything, ANYTHING, happens. I know everyone in the group has the utmost concern for safety, but I've been in a room, with a Chief of Police, when his firearm went off giving a demonstration. Things happen...

If we'd like to do a special gun outing, I'm all for it, but the Meet and Greet is not the ideal venue for it.

Agreed...... I love the smell of gun powder in the morning :grinpimp:

I sent a PM to Kenny about scouting out a location for the range.

I'll have the official schedule up by next week. Keep spreading the word to all people you know that may be interested. The meet and greet is normally where we hook many of our members.

As much as I like guns and like to shot, I am kind of with Brian on this. There will be a lot of little kids crawling in and around everything at the barn. I think a scheduled time might be ok, we can round up all the little ones and do a trail trip or something "off-site" during this time.

another idea....

There is a local gun range down the road. :hhmm: Maybe Kenny can shed some light on this since he is the local. It does say a membership is required. I will call Ed on mon.

Efird's is a 200 acre shooting facility established in 1975 which can accomodate Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun enthousiests. When turning onto the gravel road from Saint Martin's memories of my Grandparents home were running through my mind. The rustic, antique, quiet feeling was very present as I pulled into the range. Visable signage was posted and as I stopped and got out Members Only signs were also present. No way of not missing them.

As I entered the Rifle Bay more I noticed the long line of benches and steel casings on the ground some of which had been there for quite some time. No brass was present on the ground until I saw the brass buckets and empty trash cans (which is a good thing). The restrooms were dusty but clean (another good thing).

After walking through the Rifle Bay you enter the Shotgun Field. 5 concrete pads for trap/skeet shooting. Turning to my right and a short walk is the pistol bay (to the left and behind the shotgun bay). No covered benches but just an open field with 25 yard of room to shoot.

Walking back through the rifle bays and back out to the car (parking lot) is where I noticed the .22 rimfire lanes. This is a scheduled meet for children and because of safety concerns should not be used until the meet.

Adam, I am not familiar with Effird's range. I'm not exactly a gun enthusiast even though I have two pistols and a shotgun and 22 rifle. The pistols have never been out of the safe and the shotgun has never been fired. Just kept them away from the kids! But I do understand the love a lot of members have with firearms and was just trying to accommodate. With that said there are options of what Brian or Allen mentioned or having the range at a different location. The important thing is to provide a safe and fun environment for all to attend. El Presidente, I do apologize for making your job difficult!

I agree also, good call Brian.

I didn't realize that there will be that many kids. Due to this I will not be shooting at the barn. I think it will be safer and quitier if we do it some where else. I don't want to run off any new members and familys. Brian also brought up an excellant point with the insurance and liabilitiies.

Don't fret i'm looking into putting an ONSC shooting get together the following month.... more details will be in another thread.

I am going to have to agree with Brian that this shouldn't be a function of the club but rather an off site scheduled event. I think we already deal with weather as an issue to getting our members to events...esp. family friendly ones...I dont think the sound of gunfire is going to entice even more members...and like brian said the liability not only for us as a club but for the property owner as well...would hate to put them in that position should something ever happen.

Al-sounds like you have this covered in the coming months.

Probably a good idea guys. the last thing we want is anyone feeling uncomfortable. Lets plan a gun/shooting event at another time.

sounds good to me....

Adam, like I stated in the PM. I obviously missed a lot of this thread before I responded. Now I know. Haha

Sorry for getting everyone so jacked up on shooting... I think I was the one to bring all this up...

Work schedule has changed for the better. Now to talk with Mary to find out if we are coming Friday night/Saturday or just Saturday.

For those of you who hunt, I will be hunting with Red Tail Hawks on Feb 19th.
