If you are going to mount a eletric fan(Taurus) to a larger Al radiator is it better to direct all the air through the fan with a shroud or mount it so the area's the fan dosent cover free for air to flow through? My problem is that the shroud will be flat, almost flush with the back of the radiator. I might be able to get .5 inch. Is this too tight.

I don't have any worthwhile advice on using an electric fan since they seldom get the job done. After you fiddle with it, you always will have the option of an engine driven fan blade that uses the torque of the engine to blow heat out of the engine compartment.

some electric fans are designed to pull air through a 2 core rad like most newer cars have . and will not move enough air through a larger radiator to do the job .having insatalled many v8s in cruisers from chevy 6s to 501 caddys i have never had to use an electric fan and prefer not to .check online with summit racing they have info on electric fans.or check on here in the faq good luck

I had good luck with the taurus fan and the stock radiator. I just went big with a 28" al radiator this time for margin. The taurus fan moved quite a bit of air. It would blow air out the vents in hood at a very good rate.

My question is in regards to the shroud. It seems to me that I would want the fan to pull air from the whole rad.

The main reason for a shroud is to prevent your fan blade from sucking hot engine compartment air in from the sides rather than through the radiator (i.e. you don't want air to push off the back side of the fan, then circle around to the front edge of the fan creating this constant little whirl-wind off the tip of the fan blade).
