Running through a lot of things on the LC as I'm dealing with this P2445 error. I have a fan clicking noise on a cold start. It comes and goes as the vehicle is warming up. Once the vehicle is warm, it goes away completely. It's local to the fan under the hood. Anyone dealt with this before?

P2445 is the Secondary Air Injection System that only runs at cold start. Clicking could be a failing pump or valve. If there's noise coming from the fan it's a different issue.

The SAIS fans or pumps are in the passenger side front fender as well. Should be easy to distinguish from the front fan. Also the timing chain tensioners on the passenger side front of engine are known to get stuck which causes a ticking sound. This can go away as engine warms up as well. Some have had luck switching to 5w-30 to free up the tensioner.

If it really is the front fan and is temperature dependent, probably need a new fan clutch. It’s designed to be disengaged when cool and start locking up when warm so the fan is only running at capacity when engine is warm.

“Clicking” at the front of the engine could be a dozen things. Posting a video will usually help narrow things down.

Thank you - I cleared the code this morning and it has not returned - still wanting to take it in. This noise has been happening before the P2445 code came up. I anticipate they are not related. Just want to take care of everything in one full swoop. I appreciate the insight.

So hard to diagnose noises from a video. Is your air conditioner on and cycling? That doesn't sound like timing chain as that sound won't come and go. And the SAIS turns off once, it doesn't cycle.

If the timing is related to A/C compressor it could be related to anything the belt touches. If the belt is worn I'd start with replacing it, the idler pulley and the tensioner.

Would you categorize the noise as 'chirpy' or 'tappy'?

AC is off - I would categorize the noise as 'tappy'. When I have the hood up, I feel like I'm keying in to the fan for some reason. Understood it's a tough diagnosis from video- I really appreciate the effort!

There are a couple valvetrain noises I've heard on 3URs, the "holy **** my engine is blowing up" timing chain rattle, and more of a "tap" from somewhere in the upper valvetrain. Mine will do the latter quietly if things are really cold, and I've definitely seen posts from people with the same phenomenon, though it has been a while.

@xd40cal how far into this oil change are you? What viscosity index oil do you use?

Many of us have switched to 5w-30 and seen quieter valvetrain as one of the pluses.

Either way I'm pretty confident it's not the fan.
