Greg- four of the Virginia guys want to do Anthracite Thursday i told them i'd meet them at exit 116 of I-81. Can you make it? We can give them a tour of the Keystone cruisers "home field"! Anyone else up for some mid-week wheeling?
I didn't take pictures but Vince did, as did Felix and Chris from the VA group. We ended up wheeling at6 Anthracite again on Saturday due to the absolurte congestion at Rausch. Never saw Rausch anywhere near as crowded as this apst saturday, the line at the office was through the office, across the porchm, down the steps, and about thirty deep after that. The staff was short one person and the nuber of trucks overwhelming. We ended up with two groups of five at Anthracite. good day perfect weather. UnlikFriday there was no carnage Saturday thankfully!
It really sounds like Anthracite is starting to become a great alternative. Have you guys done any mapping the past two trips? I know I didn't record any tracks during my first visit and regret it as I'd struggle to find the same spots again.
And I'd still like to get up to Rock Run before they close up for the season if anyone is interested.
For me a priority is to wheel Anthracite as much as I can to get a better feel for the place. Actually I am fairly comfortable right now especially with a lot of the harder trails. I am certain there are MANY good blue and harder trails that we have not yet wheeled. Saturday we didn't do anything super difficult and in the process found a few nice trails new to Greg and me. Using Greg's tablet and the Anthracite printed map together works fairly well although many of the trails in the far right corner aren't shown on either source. Often our location on the tablet shows us on no trail at all. My goal is to really know the park well before they open the property across route 901- that's supposed to happen in the spring from what i've been told. Friday we shared the park with two jeeps, no ATV's or motorcycles. Saturday there were maybe a half dozen other full size vehicles and we did in fact run into a small Cherokee group a few times. There were a lot of the fast moving cycles and ATV's there Saturday.
We were finally able to make it up the steep and slippery hillclimb on trail 717- although at the expense of Greg's front tire (off the bead) and rim (bent to hell). Greg- looking forward to seeing some pictures of Fall Crawl and from October 17!
I like the place. I like rausch, too, I liked Paragon and I like wheeling behind my house. Anthracite is failry new and exciting, never crownded for us, and in my opinion only going to get better.
We had a great day wheeling at Anthracite on Saturday. Just a bit of mud, great views of the fall colours wheeling through hardwood forests, hardly any mud, several very scenic overlooks, not much mud, great guys from Capital City and Bay to Blueridge Cruisers with cool rigs and trails that suited my 77. And unlike the narrow, wet, waterlogged and flooded, muddy trails back home, trails where quite dry and just a bit of mud . Got back home to the Great White North at 11 pm Sunday night after a morning of driving some very interesting back roads along the Susquehanna.
The pics as always don't tell the whole story- it was a glorious three days on the trails, good weather, great people and just good fun. Winter's coming and except for club runs (now every other month) there will be no big events until May. Hoping to get back to Anthracite in an unofficial capacity several times before next wheeling season rolls around we want to be the Toyota guys most familiar with the layout and trail system at Anthracite. I forsee a lot of activity at Anthracite next July during the Coal Mine event. For as good as Rausch is and how thankful I am that is in operation so close to home it is exciting to explore a new facility. We've only scratched the surface at Anthracite and they promise to be opening the other half of the park next year.
