The bolt that threads into the tab at the top of the smog pump to tighten it down is stripping out the threads in that tab.

It should be easy enough to rethread for a larger bolt, no?

Pull off the air pump hose and try to hold your thumb over the hose. If you can block the flow easily, you probably need to rebuild it, or replace it. There's at least one good rebuild thread on the '40 forum.

If you end up needing a new cat, call Sean at Sunnyoaks Muffler.

He'll hook you up for only one $. Tell him I sent you.

Well, Neil, that would be because I'm an idiot and sent the PM to someone else from Santa Cruz who is named Neil and drives a 60 series Cruiser (MountainCruiser62). How many of you are there? ;p

Anyway, I'll give you a call. Other Neil, if you read this, you're probably wondering what the hell I'm smoking while offering you free parts. Sorry...

We need to start our own chapter or something!

Have you run through the emissions test procedure? I found that I had no air going to the cat due to a faulty vacuum valve. Fixed that, and bang, SMOG passes again with flying colors. I am not a guru by any means, but I can tell you more of what I went through if you like.

Where does it show how to test that? The ABV valve?

I talked to Scary Neil today and gave him the number of someone who should have a smog pump for him. Lets hope for the best.

We should all do a meet and greet at the Starbucks on 41st and Soquel by Safeway. I'm up there pretty much every Tuesday and Thursday. I also need to stop by the house on Soquel that has the lifted Sand colored 60. I see it all the time but have never stopped in to say hi.

Ed, I'm going to try to call your exhaust guy tomorrow. I have a rattling cat. Thanks for posting that.

it is described in the 2F emissions manual in the section on the AI system. The air valve cluster on your left fenderwell is called the ACV (air control valve?). It consists of two vacuum actuatuate valves, the ASV (Air Supply valve?) and ABV (air bypass valve)

For anyone in the Bay area, Sean, the fella that Fast Eddy recommended, is a great guy to deal with. I stopped by to have the rattling cat checked out today and ended up getting both replaced. It turned out that one was completely empty, and the other had about 50% of the inlet side of the element melted shut. No wonder I was getting crappy gas mileage and power on the hills. By no means is replacing cats with CARB legal ones cheap, but Sean did the best he could with the price and provided a great service. Time will tell if I get any improvement. /hijack

Neil, any updates? Did you get in touch with Marcus for that smog pump?
