I'm told that the secondaries on my factory carb are frozen (that means nothing to me) and I probably just need to replace it.

I plan to replace it with a factory carb. That being said, other than fuel & air filters, is there anything else that should be replaced/changed when I replace the carb? Insulator?

Truck is April '85. Thanks.

Do a rebuild on your carb; no need to replace the whole thing. I rebuilt mine with the Toyota kit for about $ 60-70.

You should not need to replace your insulator underneath unless it is damaged.

Your fuel system is subjective to the condition of your fuel tank, fuel lines, and whether the truck has been sitting for a long time. I would, however, replace your fuel filter for cheap insurance. It is cheap and easily accessible in a 60.

Thanks. So frozen secondaries (whatever that means) are not catastrophic? Thanks.

Nope. A rebuild also should include taking the carb apart and soaking the parts in a special solution; it should get her purring again in no time. It did wonders for my idle and the way my FJ60 runs in general.

The picture below is looking at the front of the carburetor. The diaphragm circled in red is the secondary diaphragm. When vacuum is applied to the diaphragm it pulls in the linkage, which then rotates the secondary shaft, which opens the secondary throttle plate. The secondary throttle will only open when the primary throttle is also open. With the engine off, you can open the primary throttle (by rotating the accelerator linkage at the back of the carb, or by having someone step on the accelerator pedal. with the primary throttle open, you should be able to move the secondary linkage into the diaphragm to open the secondary throttle. If the secondary shaft won't rotate, then it is rusted or frozen. If the shaft seems to rotate freely, then your secondary diaphragm may be leaking (not holding vacuum)
