After finding no answers to my question on the search function, I need some advice: My factory antenna motor seems to function properly, but the mast does not move up and down. If it operates like others I've seen, I suspect the geared nylon thread attached to the mast has worn out.........Am I right? If so, is there an aftermarket source for replacement masts or is this a dealer item?

Thanks,

dnp

The mast is available seperately from the local stealership or you can call C-Dan.

I replaced the bent mast on my 93 for around $30 from C-dan. It didn't fix the problem of the antenna not moving up and down.

A new antenna assemble runs around $130 or so from the dan man, I have one of those coming too!

My motor does the same thing occassionally, but my bigger problem is that the mast doesn't like tree branches and it bends easily when I forget to put it down. My solution is to get one of those small stubby rubber antennas and do away with the motor.

lots of posts on this one...
(there is a difference in masts depending on year, IIRC, with 97 being best of course... :D)

dnp,
Eric is correct, there are dozens of posts on the antenna assembly.

You haven't told us what year truck you are referring to so there is no way to give you the information you requested unless:
A. We are omnipotent (I'm not, don't know about the others.)
B. We guess. (I'm too lazy, don't know about the others.)

I vote for:

C: we know, but we won't tell you 'cuz you didn't tell us what kind of truck you have, and we know you couldn't really have done a search using the word "antenna" becuase even the current search engine will come up with something for this topic. :flipoff2: :slap:

dnp,

All kidding aside, folks on this forum will always try to help you out, but it's quite helpful, and you may have noticed, that folks put their truck info in their sig line--saves a lot of guessing and misinformation.

You folks are right - Sorry for the shortage of information. When I filled out my profile, I guess I didn't really take notice of what the "signature" box was for......I guess that's a good description of user error

Hopefully, I edited it correctly, and it will show below (with this first additional post) what truck I have.

Two things:

1. I SWEAR I've been performing searches before EVERY post I make. Unfortunately, I either don't get responses that are pertinent to my search or the search finds nothing. Now, I'm confident there's probably some user error in this situation also, but I find the search engine here to be MUCH less effective than those I have used on other automotive boards. Please understand that I'm not trying to flame anyone (especially those who are kind enough to provide this INVALUABLE source of information), but I just don't get the results I believe I should be getting........Any advice on using the search function?

2. I picked up a factory relacement mast for my 97 yesterday, and I started to install it. However, when I ran the toothed nylon tape down into the antenna motor, it stopped short of pulling the antenna all the way down into the mast support. I surmised that the tape must need to be shortened by cutting off a small portion, but I thought I'd check with this board to make sure that's what needs to be done......any thoughts? (Better yet, any link to earlier information on this topic???)

Thanks, and sorry again for the earlier lack of info on my part.

my vote is for (d). Get XM, and keep the antenna down all of the time.

dnp,
The '97 antenna (and late 96's) works a little differently than prior model 80s. Yours has a long threaded nylon gear. Do NOT cut it off.

I'll give you the quick install; you can find elaborate posts on removing the motor and doing the installation. Try searching Keyword=antenna, author=Beowulf, days=600, posts=600. Please let me know if that doesn't get you to some good install posts and I will post links for you.

Basically, you have 2 conditions you need to be aware of. First is if the mast broke and you were able to retrieve the complete nylon gear. If that is the case then you feed the new one in by using the dash buttons. Having a helper makes it easier. The last inch or two doesn't go in until you turn off the ignition and the antenna cycles once or twice. Then it will fully retract into the fender. As you know, one of the features of the antenna on the '97 is that it remembers the last position and returns to that position when the ignition is turned on. The antenna will fully retract if you insert a CD, a tape, or turn off the radio.

The second condition is more complex. If the nylon gear is broken inside of the motor then you need to remove the antenna motor assembly from the inside of the fender, open it, retrieve the broken bits, and re-install. Then proceed as in #1. Removing the motor is covered in the archives so let me know if you come up empty with your search and I will assist.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
