When my wife and I decided to quit our corporate jobs and leave Washington, D.C., we wanted to live life differently. We wanted more freedom to travel on our own time, and freedom to explore outdoors. In our search for a home in Northern Michigan, we found a dream property that we loved, on a lake where my wife had spent time as a child. The property is 40 wooded acres on an all sports lake. It has an attached 2 car garage and 30x40 pole barn. The one thing we did not like, is that the home is a 20 year old manufactured home. The owners who “built” (or bought) it, paid for upgrades, such as 2x6 exterior walls and real drywall inside. That said, it was 20 years old and not our style. So, we had dreams of someday rebuilding. Our first project was to open it up, because it was completely cut up by walls everywhere. We removed three walls (one load bearing) and installed new flooring prior to moving in (while my wife was 8 months pregnant…she’s obviously amazing). That was phase one, which was three years ago.

With plans to next remodel the “finished” basement (i.e. re-finish the basement), we found leaks. So, before moving forward with that, I needed to find the source. Upon tearing out siding, I realized there is no sheathing on the outside of the home…there was siding, then Styrofoam panels in some places, and insulation. We decided that we would add sheathing, but this would be the perfect opportunity to add new windows. One of the things I really did not like was the low (7.5 foot outside walls). We had come from a MCM home with walls of glass, and that’s what I love. Given our property, we wanted to "bring the outside in", and 7.5 foot exterior walls do not allow for large windows once you put in a header, so we decided on an extensive remodel project…raising the roof.

Below is the progress we have made thus far. This has all taken place over the past 7 weeks. We started Dec 16th.

Here is how the home looked prior to us starting this project:

We started by installing beams to support the new roof:

First load of lumber arrived:

And, we started tearing off the old siding to make room to build the new roof. Our plan, due to it being winter in Michigan, was to build the new roof, enclose it, and tear the old roof out from the inside. Daunting, to say the least...

It didn't take too long to have the new roof constructed, and being closing in the sides. We wanted a modern looking roof line, with many windows...

We framed in the windows that we could, while still supporting the old roof. Once that was complete, we started tearing the old roof out, from the inside. We removed all the shingles and sheathing from the outside, to save weight. Then, from the inside, we cut out the old trusses and drywall...little by little. The worst part was getting rid of all the blown in cellulose insulation. That was extremely time consuming, and messy...

We decided to do this in stages, one room at a time. The first is the largest room, which consists of the living room and dining room, since it's all been opened up by removing interior walls. Once we had the old roof cut out, we were able to finish framing the windows and sliding door.

My wife and I have done a ton of work, and she's been a real trooper. The house has obviously been a construction mess, and our family (us and our 2 girls) have been living in the home during this entire process...

Lot of work. And it's going good! Welcome to (or back to) Michigan. What lake are you on? With this present cold streak it should be frozen pretty good now.

Thanks! It's been a ton of work, but also exciting. We are on one of the many School Section Lakes within Michigan. We are over near Ludington.

Ice has been good enough to fish for over a month, and it's over a foot thick now. Lots of perch being caught, which surprises me!

You have a very understanding wife, not many would put up with that.

Well done. I don't think I have ever seen a roof on top of a roof and then take the old roof down, and I have a GC father.

Impressive! Very cool project. Looking forward to the rest!

Amazing transformation and incredible location. That's god's country. We used to vacation close-ish when I was a kid. Bitely.

I've remodeled an entire 125 year old farmhouse and blown in insulation is the work of the devil. Can't stand wearing a dust mask during demolition so I've inhaled a lot.

Keep us updated.

She is pretty awesome. She has learned to love Land Cruisers as much as I, and puts up with me. Putting the new roof on first was definitely a new experience and had it's challenges, particularly supporting the old roof while trying to close everything in...but the problem solving was fun.

It is God's country, I agree. We are close to Bitely and often frequent Woody's Bar and Grill, if you've ever been there.

I despise masks as well, and agree that blown in insulation is the work of the devil. 22 year old insulation is even worse. It was disgusting...

Looks like a snowballing project :)

I spent lots of time as a kid pumping gas at my uncle's marina up near Traverse City. I would like to get back to visit that area as I haven't been since I graduated from Michigan Tech.

TC is a great area...if you decide to come visit, I recommend the last weekend of June (29th). We are having our second annual Cruiser party at my place. Last year we had about 15 cruisers and 30 people. BBQ and drinks, followed by a lot of two-tracking.

Things are progressing...finally able to get the drywall hung in the living/dining area. The front two bedrooms are completely wired and insulated, just have to tidy up a few things, then will be able to have them hang drywall. All of the windows are in, with the exception of one 6 foot slider. Waiting for a little bit better weather before opening the house up to the elements, again.
