Generally speaking, if they are selling it to you it is a profit making product for them and you are an (expected) net loser in absolute dollar terms. That is the reality of the situation. They have all the data and you have none.
The most appropriate response to the original question is to point out that this is insurance against parts failure and insurance exists because as an individual you may want to hedge against large loss. If you have the financial means to handle any potential repair without concern then you should never buy warranties (or insurance for that matter).
The other major component to these warranty products is time value of money. You may end up using $4000 of warranty claims but you will likely do so many years from now. $2k today is worth significantly more than $2k 8 years from now.
The one big caveat is if you have information that the warranty seller does not- how you will use the vehicle, that your driving is especially hard on an engine/trans/other part, etc.
