I am planning to get a tune up in the very near future and I am also in need of a new exhaust system. What have you folks done with your systems? I am debating whether to go to a muffler shop and get it done by them or purchasing an OEM system. Are there any pros and cons to an aftermarket exhaust system to an OEM? Please let me know what you think. Also pictures would be helpful. Thanks!

Well, exhaust systems will eventually deteriorate after a certain period of time, so I just had a local shop do mine. Sounds better and they bent it right where I wanted it so that it dosen't come out under the rear bumper.

Cat

I had a local man make a short bypass piece to replace the catalytic converter. I am in a non-smog state. I am sure that it allows better exhaust flow but it also increased the sound level. Some people like the exhaust sound but I don't. I like to hear the radio.
I suspect that a local exhaust shop can to the whole thing for $250. Good luck.

The OEM cat back exhaust is cheap at $140 or so, and easy to install yourself. Doing it yourself also gives you a chance to inspect(and service if necessary) the various rubber hangers, etc. The one advantage,IMO, to the custom shop approach is that they can reroute the tail pipe behind the rear wheel for those that are concerned with extreme approach/departure angles. The possible disadvantage of custom is when they use inferior parts, especially[but not limited to]the rubber hangers, etc.

That is exactly what I did. I tore my exhaust off from the cat back on a boulder, and was given a flowmaster, so I had a local shop bend up some pipe and put on the new muffler. Comes out right behind the rear wheel and sounds great.

Definately take that route. OEM is nice, but it will rust out or be bashed up soon enough so that it will not make that big of a difference. Engine parts are a completey story.....

OEM is guaranteed for life if it is installed by Toyota.

Can you elaborate? What does this guarantee cover?

i've gone with OEM for most replacement parts so far, except for the exhaust. i wanted something that would be higher up between the rails and would rust through easily.

i ended up going to a reputable exhaust shop here in town and picked up a Magnaflow w/ 2.25 in/outs and they bent up some stainless pipe to match the stock routing. all told it was $240 out the door. the muffler was stainless as well and welded versus crimped/rolled.

i'm very happy with the work. can't see it from the side and i like that. i feel like performance is a little more even as there aren't holes in the exhaust and pressure moves evenly.

just my opinion.

The OEM muffler and labor is free if it is installed by Toyota and fails.

CDan quoted me $85 for the cat back exhaust last week (no hangers, just the pipe and muffler). At that price, I don't think I could justify paying the dealership to install it just to get the lifetime warranty.

Anyone use the Man-A-Fre cat back exhaust system?

PO replaced rusty muffler with something that was the size of my left testicle (tiny). I looked like it came out of a Honda Civic. I had it replaced with the quieter version of the 40 series Flowmaster. I can tell there was a small increase in power in the high end cruising down the higway. The "40 series Delta Flow" IMO is quieter than I wanted. I am trying to sell my OE cat so I can buy the MagnaFlow cat that's supposed to give more sound and flow. I was told the OE cat was as good as you could get, but I'm out for the sound. I should have just gotten the Standard 40 series and called it a day. I also had the tail pipe come out behind the left rear wheel. If I can bang up the tail pipe, in that position, tucked up under the truck I've got more series problems than a bent tail pipe.

I'm thinking the 70 series muffler is what I'll put in for the DuraMax I;m never going to be able to buy.

I just put one on my 60 a few months ago. I had the muffler shop put it on for $30 or so. They welded it together instead of just clamping it together.

No complaints other than the price. Better routing, sounds a little better, but is still really quiet. Didn't notice much, if any, performance increases.

Why not upgrade the exhaust for more power while you are replacing it??

I agree with Mace. If you're going to replace the muffler, why not try to squeeze a little more juice out of the 2F?

I went with Flowmaster 50 Delta-Flow. It sounds like the stock muffler plus a little bit of a growl. I had them put 2.5" pipe from the cat back. It feels like I get a bit more power at the high end of the rpm range.

Hope that helps.
