I recently noticed the sound of escaping exhaust on my 87' BJ70. Check the pipes underneath and all was good and tight. Lifted the hood and everything looked ok until I moved the throttle and noticed exhaust escaping from the exhaust manifold.

When I attempted tightening the nut on the front manifold stud of course it broke in half. Now I need to remove the manifold and disconnect from the exhaust header pipe to get at the busted stud.

My question is in others experience is it better to replace new all the studs (and lower bolts) and the gasket? I have a feeling that other studs may be close to the same condition and it might be a good idea for the cost involved to replace all hardware & gasket.

You have given your self the answer.
Replace the studs and gasket. I had the same thing happen on my RJ 70. If you have the manifold off, you might as well do the job right and save your self the hassle of doing the job twice down the road.:steer:

Just did this last month on my 1987 BJ70. Both upper front and rear studs were broken off. Was really lucky removing broken ones and did not need to drill or retap the threads. In fact, did not have to remove the manifold, so I left the old gasket in place.
Installed new studs, washers, nuts for front and rear uppers. Got mine from NAPA.
Removed the remaining 6 bolts, one by one, cleaned and reused them. They all looked fine. Probably should have bought new ones, but that would have been another trip into town/another day loss/etc.

I have this same problem on my 87 JDM BJ74. Looking to replace the manifold, bolts and gasket. I was unaware there were studs as well?? I thought there was only bolts going into the head. Does someone have an exploded diagram of a 13bt so I can find my way DIY style?
