Anyone out there replace the exhaust manifold gasket on a 22RE? It looks pretty straight forward but I don't know if there will be any suprises. It is cold here in wisconsin and I don't want to spend more than a couple hours on this project. Any advice?

Just replaced the head on mine. One of the exhaust manifold studs was stripped - only took a few ft-lbs to finish it off.

I used an 11mm tap to rethread the head, then had to machine a custom stud that was 11mm on one end and 10mm on the other to match the rest.

Bottom line - don't overtighten the nuts. Use a torque wrench. Other than that, it's an easy job.

Ditto on the strip. Actually paid someone to replace the gasket 3 years ago due to exhaust leak and either they stripped it or ignored the previously stripped threads. On mine the bad one was closest to the firewall. Napa (if you have then in WI) sells a helicoil kit for $30 that has all the stuff you need. I had to use a right angle drill motor to drill it out. Just make sure to keep the drill perpendicular to the manifold surface. It's not too difficult since you have a pilot- the existing hole.

It's been in there more than a year. Amazing how much quieter the truck is. I wish I had done it sooner.

Why is it always that one that strips? Has to be the hardest one to reach. Same one is now stripped on my son's '89 4Runner. Argh...

If it strips i think you can heely(spelling) coil it. It is an easy job just takes a little time

I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago. Keep in mind that the one manifold gasket may not be the only one you will need. On my 86 4runner, there are also two gaskets for the air inlet tubes. In my trucks case, the holes are plugged with plates and two gaskets. they are around 4"x 1". I ended up having to buy a exhaust gasket kit to get them.
Then there are two round flange gaskets at the manifold to the pipe. You'll want to remove the manifold to clean it and check it for warpage if you have the straight edge, so they'll come off and should be replaced as well.
And if you're going through all this trouble, consider replacing the pipe to cat flange gasket. that may be a part of the leak.
Have fun.
And to think I complain about having to work out under a tree when it's 70 degrees out. Gotta love socal weather.
