Who has modified the exhaust system to be above the roof line? I realize the system works great even underwater as it is, but what if your engine stops and engine fills with water? Im sure someone has done something close to that. I feel the body armor to protect it is the hard part as well as where to go up.

You could have your snorkel on one side, exhaust on the other. No need to run it all the way to the back... other than fumes (maybe?)

I suppose fumes would be a problem because I wouldnt want to go higher that right about the roof line, there are plenty of low branches which would rip it right off! too low and near the drivers window would give me fumes on the highway?

You're not going to going anywhere where you'll need an exhaust system that high. Water will not back up that far, if it does, you'll have other issues to worry about by then.

thats what i was about to say.

if your engine shuts off in water that deep and you have a snorkel then something else happened and you arnt gonna be able to start in the water anyway, so may as well drag it ashore and pull the plugs turn it over and get the water out that way.

if you dont have a snorkel... well... hopefully you got lucky.

I just want to see six stacks out of the hood with six individual tractor style exhaust flappers.... I have no idea what they are called. I am also obsessed with mudtrucks, so that might have something to do with it.

I popped the clutch once and my cruiser died, as im sure we all have at one point. I thought if it was to happen underwater id have a real big problem i could have avoided. I just think someone has done this or seen this. Its not about need, its about want!!!
That F350 that has tractor exhaust stacks through the bed isnt really for gas milage!

If I put the exhaust in front of the snorkle would that qualify for and EGR?

I totally understand what you mean about need/want. I don't think you can put the exhaust out in front of the passenger cabin and have it still be legal, but I could be wrong. I know I have seen a picture of a landcruiser (it could have been some other 4x4) with the exhaust out of the rear and then up to the roof beside a ladder, which may or may not have been used for support.

I like the idea, and if I was 'going all out' on my truck I would do it HMMWV style. I would wrap it in tough steel mesh like a HMMWV and secure it to the cab with a bracket at the top:

if you stall the engine with the engine under the water, then water WILL enter through the exhaust system.
So long as the engine is running, it will not.

I had an insulated exhaust "stack" running up the back of my '40, between the body and the cargo rack for a short while. I DO get into water deep enough for this to be a concern (Stalling with the engine under water). Over all it worked well and was not much of a cosmetic impact. Looked pretty decent actually. But the insulation did not work well and I was reconfiguring my snorkel anyway so the exhaust stack came off. Currently I run the exhaust out the side of the rear fender, passenger side, just under the top of the wheel well. This puts it about 4 feet high but not a lot, if any higher than the engine. Just have to make sure not to stall with the engine under the water. :)

Not sure how you could run a stack on a '60 without it looking awful and being very prone to getting torn off... and getting in the way too. You have to be careful of the heat too. Uninsulated exhaust pipe will sear skin in a heartbeat. :(

Mark...

In the mid 90s I think when honda introduced the passport, they had an option that came with the exhaust high. Anyone remember that or have a picture ?

x3 on getting torn off

snorkels start high enough off to not snag much but the stack would be another story

I think someone mentioned you could run it like a snorkel but on the other side.. :hhmm:

A buddy of mine ran that set up on his 1983 BJ42 - Snorkel up one side and an exhaust up the other (with the trucker's style flap on the top) ...his girlfriend got very tired of having diesel exhaust smelling hair.

So did she give him the old, "it's me or the BJ?"

I can't remember the guy's name, maybe Sonny Henniger??? had a ram charger back in the 80's and 90's that had the stack coming up behind the driver seat up thru the cab out the roof. This was before it was painted drab green, it was yellow and brown maybe??
